Here's a question that I would like to hear some different opinions on -
I have a Remington 673 in 6.5 Rem Mag & am looking for a scope for it. I've narrowed it down to a list of possibilities, and would like some insight or suggestions of other things to consider. My requirements are... <=$400 optical quality good range of power. This gun is going to see use in anything from bottomlands and heavy timber (25-50 yards) to longer shots (100-350 yards) across cornfields and the like, possibly having to acquire a moving target. (utilitarian deer rifle) I am very attracted to the 2.5-10 range for the extra flexibility on both ends, but would consider 3-9 as well... Nikon Monarch 2.5-10x42, mildot (i like the mildot scopes; i find that they give an added element of knowing what your holdover really is.) http://www.swfa.com/pc-8760-2201-nikon-25-10x42-monarch-riflescope.aspx Bushnell Elite 4200 2.5-10x40 I know this is a good scope from reading on here, but my thought is that for an extra $30, is the Nikon the better buy? http://www.swfa.com/pc-1277-185-bushnell-25-10x40-elite-4200-rifle-scope.aspx (another thought I have had is that for an extra few $$$, and a sacrifice of 0.5 power on the low end, i could pick up the Nikon Monarch 3-12.. any thoughts?) http://www.swfa.com/pc-8764-2201-nikon-25-10x50-monarch-riflescope.aspx Sightron SII/SII Big Sky, 3-9 models. I have another Sightron (6-24x42 mildot) on my varmint rifle and like it a lot... Some of their 3-9's are a bit easier on the wallet than the other ones i've listed. Any thoughts on these? Basically, I guess I want my cake and to eat it too. I really want to buy the best scope I can for as reasonably as I can, but would rather spend the money up front and get quality. I spent too much money on cheap scopes in my younger, more foolish years only to replace it with better glass down the road. Cry once, right? I am open to any other suggestions too.. I've also looked at some of the 3.5-10 offerings (Bushnell 3200 & Sightron SII), but am a bit hesitant to be much above 3 for the close-in shots. Thanks & have a great weekend! |

After dealing with Nikon cs ( although I have a few) , I would go with the Bushnell
Bushnell Elite 4200 2.5-10x40
I know this is a good scope from reading on here, but my thought is that for an extra $30, is the Nikon the better buy? http://www.swfa.com/pc-1277-185-bushnell-25-10x40-elite-4200-rifle-scope.aspx or save a few bucks and get the 3x9 for $249 |

I don't have a Monarch, but I do have a 4200 3-9X40 as well as a Zeiss Conquest 3-9X40. I would highly recommend the Zeiss, but its $449.00. If that's too much, then go with the 4200. I'm not sure there is much difference in 2.5 vs 3 or 9 vs 10. I would save some $$ and go with the 3-9 or spend a little more and go with the 3-12 or even 4-12.

I would go either with Bushnell Elite 4200 2.5-10x40 or Sightron S2 Big Sky 3-9x42 or 3-12x42.
It depends on how much eye relief you think you might need. Bushnell is a bit cheaper, but Sightron has notably more eye relief. Optically, they are very similar. ILya |

I'll take the 2.5-10x Monarch for $400, Alex!!
I like the 2.5-10x model and it would have an ideal power range for what you described.
The 3-12x and the 4-16x Monarchs were nice, but they are a little more fickle with head position, or so it seemed to me.
The 2.5-10x is more forgiving with head position and has 4" of eye relief and decent glass.
Please do consider the BDC reticle too.
Welcome to Optics Talk and good luck with your choice!!

I believe that any of the scopes that you have mentioned in your post are going to fit the bill very nicely. It is really a matter of choice dependent upon taste and dollar.
