Hurricane Ike is bearing down on the Texas coast--probably hit there by lunchtime....I used to live in Freeport back in the 70s....Surfside, Texas---where we all used to party-- might get totally wiped out... My cousin John is in Houston this morning hunkered down....

I think Category 3 out over the water.....but because it is 70% larger than normal....it could be the worst storm in 50 years!!!  It is 530 miles wide!!

Map of Galveston, Texas.  Another way to put it would be to use the word "sandbar".  There are tons of beautiful old buildings in this town.  Most of them were built since the great hurricane of 1900.....however, there are a few survivors from the nineteenth century.

The Seawall today....or at present...

The Seawall in 1910.  The Building of the Seawall is fascinating.  They built it after the 1900 Hurricane.  You can read about it at www.therealgalveston.com.

Your right about gas prices.  Gas in central Illinois has jumped to over $4.00 per gallon.  Was just $3.55 just 5 days ago when oil was higher per barrel.  Correction, just got phone call from friend in Belleville, IL where they (the robber gas barons) are posting $5.65 at all pumps.

Never seen anything like this. Started blowing around 9AM and went to 4PM with winds around 80 mph. 75% of Louisville was without power and it's bad all over the place. As bad as it was here I can't imagine how bad it was in Texas. I have a new respect for hurricanes!
Life's concerns should be about the 120lb pack your trying to get to the top of the mountain, and not the rock in your boot.
