I just picked up my XCR Compact .223 today...........because of this thread I checked out the bolt and it looks pretty much just like the one pictured(the cut is not as bad/big I don't think). I am no expert but it appears to me..........to be done like that on purpose.

My gun seems to operate very smoothly..........although this is my first Rem. 700. The bolt breaks about the same as my Sako 75 (but the Sako has 3 lugs)........after it breaks it is not quite as smooth but pretty close to the Sako action !!

I have not shot the gun yet. But I set it up today and cycled some shells just to see ........seems pretty good to me ! I am just wondering if this is the way they are coming or if I got a defective one also !!

Returned it no problem.

Remington told me that sometimes in final fitting of the bolt they will make small adjustsments to the bolt.  However mine was more than typical and it still hung up a little.  Before returning the rifle I worked the bolt some more and it did get smoother.  But when I looked at the bolt a very obvious wear mark (silver in color) could be seen as the bluing and metal was worn away.  That would be where a gunsmith would file more metal away to get the bolt smoother and not hanging up.  The irony is I may not have noticed it had more metal already been removed.

I checked my other 700's for the same modification.  I noticed a smaller but similar cut on my 270 but no cuts on my 260 and 308.

From what I can tell.........mine looks about half the size of your picture. I guess I will keep an eye on the blueing. I hope there's nothing to it !! Sad

Timber, what vintage is your .260?  For some reason, I find myself really wanting one of those, but they don't make it in the CDL.
take em!

My 260 is a 2006.  I bought it around January 2007 when I saw that it wasn't in the 2007 catalog.  Remington is offering it in the CDL SF this year.  (EDIT:  You're right Pyro, Model 7 CDL in 260 is available in addition to the CDL SF).

EDIT:  This a picture of my 700 Mountain Rifle LSS.

sorry tip, your going to have to hunt for the m700, there isnt anything wrong with the m7 i like mine and my m700 both, and other than the shorter action and shorter barrel, there isnt much difference
i just checked on gunbroker and all the m700's they have in the .260 are cdl sf, which are very sharp rifles, i have one in a .264win and its a nice piece. a little spendy but nice
