Another question for yall? Well i have decided to get either the ior tactical in either 10x42 or the 16x42, but i cant make up my mind. (both in my price range)
I will be putting it on a .308, and will mainly be shooting paper, beercans, pumkins, etc... at distance.
I will be shooting some close range for shatz and giggles, but mainly 100 and out. The gun will be for target shooting mainly but if a coyote comes around well you know!
I ask yall for pros and cons for each scope, i know the higher power wont be as good for dusk or dawn, and it will have a smaller FOV. These dont concern me much.
Just need some help on my decision, want to set up rifle well so i can make my buddy have to buy the beer for the night in our target comp's we have.
Also what height rings do i need to look for. The rifle is a savage 10fp hs precision and the scope has a 42mm obj.

How well can you see at 240 feet away? I ask this because at 10x that is what 800 yrds will be equal to. Unless you are planning to do serious target shooting only and no hunting. Then the 10x is really all you will need. Provided that your eyes are in good shape. Bear this in mind as well, 10x fixed is a good bit high for most hunting applications.

If the rifle is pretty much a range queen, and your not really concerned about poor low light performance I'd say go with the 16X.

The 10X gives you more options than the 16X you can press a 10X into hunting mode but a 16X would be really worthless in my opinion for the area I hunt in. 10X.
At close range, the 16X ain't good. And if punching paper, 10X can get you on target out to 1,000 yards (not that the bullet is good for anything at that range.) there are huge advantages to the 10X and only a minor few for the 16X, get the 10X. It is far more versatile. |

10x is the way to go.
With good quality glass, you can shoot very small targets pretty far away while still maintaining good versatility. ILya |

My newest project gun, a Savage .223 wears a SS 16X . I like the 16X alot for range work. It fits my needs for group shooting at 100 yds and I like the extra magnification for 200-300 yards as well. Mirage is not that big of a bother compared to my 36X BR scopes. The more I shoot the SS 16X the more I like it. The 10X is more versitle for sure, but the 16X (IMHO) is the perfect "in between" scope. Your mileage may vary.

16x is more realistic in a variable like a 4-16 in a fixed power the 10x is the better choice and that is more than you need for most things. As far as the IOR line I really like the fixed 6x42 and from there my next favorite is the

The 10X makes it easier to spot your bullet strikes than a 16x.
If I wanted one for strictly .22 rimfire tactical type shooting I'd go with the 16 since there would be an advantage in seeing the bullet holes at 150-250 yards. Beats looking through a spotting scope especially if being timed.
