i have noticed that some of the loads in this book have a bit more powder but get the same speed with the same length of barrel.
also somebody want to explain to me how in one of my manuals the 6.5rem mag can out run a .264 win?? im thinking its a typo.

Did they say what kind of velocities they were getting with the 140 gr and what barrel length. I have a bunch of N560 and N165.
Thanks Roy |

Don't think to many whitetails would walk away from a hit with a 140 Accubond launched at 3250.

Nope, but you would be surprised to see some of the artillery that shows up in some of the Sask hunting camps I been in. One guy used to hunt with a nice 7mm Rem mag and one year he swears he hit a big one that he never recovered. Well, don't you know he shows up the following year armed to the teeth with a 300 Weatherby. He used to bust my balls with my "little 280 Ackley".

Well I can't really rib the guy too much as I bought a 700 APR in 300 WM. But, in all honesty, I just really liked the rifle and they only offered it in long action magnum calibers. Didn't have a 300 WM at the time so I figured WTF. I'm not sorry I did, because it is one of the most accurate rifles I've ever shot. I'll just never look you straight in the eye and try to convince you it was necessary to dispatch a fricken whitetail.

ive shot them with 300's also, and they work just as well as the 22-250 does.
back to the manual, one thing i wish was there was there coal measurements for each bullet, they just use a max oal and call it good the hornady manual has a coal listed for each bullet. Edited by pyro6999 - September/14/2008 at 21:24 |

For whatever reason, I have always had the best accuracy with the bullets just touching the lands. Just don't start off with book max.

That's because optimal COAL differs with each individual rifle, so it would be a meaningless number. You will want to tweak the COAL for your rifle to get best accuracy anyway, once you establish the bullet and charge that gives you the best result. They show max OAL only because that is the SAAMI established max for that cartridge. Hornady shows the COAL for each bullet only as a reference to the data they tested in the test barrel they used. It really has no meaning to the individual handloader unless you happen to be using the exact same barrel as they used to arrive at their load data.
