This is where I started... A Rem 700 Light Varmint Stainless Fluted ( LVSF) in 308 ..Remmy only made the 308's for limited time, and was not the easiest to find ..this one was lnib. For some reason remington hasn't made the CDL SF in a 308, making this my only way to go as a starting point.

So, off to the online auctions I went ..I found a new take off  Rem 700 Boone and Crocket laminated stock and scooped it up, plus a Remington engraved factory floorplate ( as the LVSF has a blind mag) .I went ahead and installed a  silver Leupold Vari-XIII 2.5-8 that needed a home. I debated about that or a 4200 Elite 3x9 , but succumbed to the pressure of my son that the silver on silver looked better ,,I may change that in the future.

So , today- my oldest and I took the almost done 700 ( still needs glass bed, and the trigger is a bit heavy - not a X mark) to the range this morning . It shot pretty good given it's a first time session. I only tried Win 150 gr PP , Hornady 150 gr SST light mags , and Fed'l hi energy 180gr Woodleighs.. The Hornadys seemed to group the best for now at just under an inch .The Fed'ls surprised me at not much more than that, and  might make a decent bear round. Will have to fiddle round with loadings ( factory stuff for now) after I get it bedded and the trigger lightened up.

It was kinda fun putting together what I thought should have been a factory option all along..Now that it's done, I am sure Rem will do it next year at allot less that I have in this one --just because!

My oldest son ( 15 yrs) scored a rare MD bear permit. This will be his rifle for the hunt . I have 4 factory loads here to try -1. 180 gr Fed'l Woodleigh hi energy... 2. Fed'l 180gr Nosler partition....3) Winchester 150 gr Power points.... 4) Fed'l 165 gr Fusion loads .. I am leaning toward the 180 gr  partitions . MD doesn't grow the biggest bears, but where he will hunt is less than 5 miles from where a girl shot a 600LB+ black bear last year.

Bear comes in right after muzzleloader on Oct 20 -25. They cap the tally at 50-60 bruins, so it could end on day one ( and has in the past) . He shoots the 180's decent enough at about 1.5 moa, and it should be plenty gun for the task ( Ryan is 6'2" but only 160 lb.s or so)

Well-it figures ...We saw bear every day during muzzleloader season, and when bear came in that following Monday 2 days later--nada ... I stole a day away from school for my son, but got the call from the better half that was that, and so we only had one day to hunt ...maybe next year !!

Martin,
What kind of accuracy are you getting with the 150 gr Barnes?

Martin,
With a good bedding and trigger job you should see your groups shrink, let us know. My 700 is in the shop for a tune up also.
