we bow hunt from mid-Oct -31Jan, gun hunt from mid-Nov-31 Jan. Rules have been changing the last few years, but until last year, could take 2 deer a day. Last year could only take 1 buck/1doe / day for 3 bucks, then 2 does/day. This year, still only 3 bucks, but can take two unantlered (except spotted fawns) deer / day.
Opinion,untempered by fact,is ignorance.

Pyro, you are fast.............my point exactly, what would the deer be doing if rifles were popping off for 3 months straight?  They are not going to be walking out into wide open fields during legal shooting hours.  You need to come down and hunt with me about October 25th, for a couple of days, free place to stay, just get here and bring yo rifle, I'll even feed ya, but you will have to wipe your own buttBig%20Grin.

Darn it........ I got into this one too late I quess!  For what its worth tomp, I just got my 12 yr old son his first deer rifle.  Got a 700 CDL in .270 and went with the Conquest 3-9X40.  I tell you, we would probable be fighting over it this fall except he shoots from the wrong side!  I also have a 4200 3-9X40 and to me the Zeiss is worth the extra dollars.  One thing I would say is that the 4200 should work better than the Leupold thats on it now.
take em!

Nah.......you missed the part about hunting in SC, 10 deer total with regular bag limit, 5 bucks or all doe, plus the 4 doe tags @ $5 per pow pow in game zone 4.  I can legally kill 14 deer in SC with the extra tags and 6 in NC (4 bucks, 2 Doe), 20 total from 10-1 through 01-01-09.  Down further South around Allendale, rifle comes in very early, like in August.  One of the few spots in the country to get one in velvet with a big gun.  I made the trip a few times, but decided that I'm too fat and like to drink beer too much to hunt in August, plus the fact that the skeeters will tear you up that time of year down there.

Cheaptrick,

After re-reading, I'm hoping the Warden is the better half?  We need to get together, soon!

They all sound like great choices. It is very hard to go wrong with a Leupold though. When I started my son with a rifle deer hunting, he was twelve and did not have the size your son has, so eye relief and proper form were items of consideration. I started him on a Leupold 3x9x50 vxII, which worked well for him, on a Browning A-Bolt in .243. He has since shot guns with Burris 3x9x40 Fullfield on them, and the Nikon Buckmaster 3x9x40, which also have great eye relief. The greatest concern in the beginning  for me was proper form. Doesn't matter if he shoots a Simmons for $39.99 or a $1200.00 Zeiss, bad form is bad form. I always keep in mind that we as shooters could never shoot to a rifle's full potential, but I believe that the choices you have been given will get the job done. Just my two cents, whatever it's worth. Spend time with that boy, we are not here forever.

Thank you all for the kind words.

The dog, Hezekiah, (nicknamed "Pup"), was 10 years old and passed away shortly after this picture was taken.
After 4 years, we still can't say his name or see his picture around here without getting "misty" or just down right bawling.
