Here is a bit of my experience so far. For the last 14 years I have used a Leopold VX-III 2.5x8-36 shooting at 300-500- yards no problem, just using my eyes for distance calculation. Caribou and fox were pretty small at those distances though in my scope, but always got our target. I decided I wanted now after all this time to get a little more comfort, which is why I am here now and went and purchased the IOR 4x14-50 Tact. Illum. So I figured that it should improve or help me a lot better compared to what I have been used to.
But now with a few more discoveries, I don't know if it would be overkill to go rangefinder because of my past experiance. Even with this I have discovered to kinds of range finders. The lazer and mildot recticle binoculars. So how do these two compare with each other I still have to do some research and will call the manufactures for more detail. I would like to add a binocular rangefinder just to have one for fun, but think it would be wiser to try out my new scope and get experiance with it first if I can resist.

Here are the rangefinders that I have found so far of interest:
http://www.newcon-optik.com/lrb7x40.shtml
http://www.bushnell.com/products/rangefinder/specs/20-0836.h tml
http://www.steiner-binoculars.com/binoculars/law/481.html
http://www.valdada.com/vn/ior/01d

Here are two completly differant methods.

Please anyone give me comments, comparisons etc. on these along with your input regarding my above experiance to my present situation.

Thanks

Merry Xmas

Mil dot and moa reticles are fun to learn and the info you learn will make you a better shooter.  I prefer modern technology my self and would rather just push a button.

The Steiner and IOR reticle for range finding is somewhat complicated to use and time consuming.  The Bushnell unit you selected is very simple and fast to use.  I have never seen a Newson...sorry.

The IOR that you purchased. Does it have an MP8 reticle? If so I think you should no doubt get a range finder that gives you the range by the push of a button. Would seem kinda silly to have two different optics where you would have to calculate the range. This way you could check yourself with the Bushnell or Newcon when you find the range with the MP8 reticle.

Hi Brady
It does have the MP8.I'll go for the lazer version as you mentioned. I am down to two choices, The Bushnell Yardage Pro® Quest 8x36-or the Leica Rangefinder 7x21-1200.
I'm a little concerned about The Bushnell Yardage Pro® Quest 8x36 because of it's weird specks
Reflective surfaces: 1,300 yards,
Trees: 700 yards,
Deer: 450 yards,
Flag: 325 yards
Not very far for deer. I'm already shooting Caribou at that distance with a standard scope, but I do like the idea of a binocular over a monocular.
Do you know how far the Leica Rangefinder 7x21-1200 can range deer? From what I have seen so far you can't go by any companies specks, because they don't specify their distance for what. That's where it's important since it would really give us the strenght of their lazer.

Inukshuk

Those Bushnell specifications are the norm for any laser-type ranging equipment.  The maximum range the unit can identify is not only a product of the target color, but also the target material or texture.

Softer materials such as an animal’s tissue does not offer as reflective of a target as say a hard wooden tree of the exact same color.

I think the wavelength commonly used is about 900nm, which is on the upper side of the infrared spectrum.  The ambient temperature of the target may also play a role in the ranging ability.

The Leica probably can beat 450yards but probably not by much. It will be substantially less than 1200 yards.

Hi Boomholzer

That info clarifies a lot, but with this new info from what it would seam a lazer rangefinder wouldn't be able to range a deer at 700-800 yards?

I would jump on a leica rangefinder over any other. They just offer more compared to other rangefinders: clearer image's, LED display, compactness, and a better laser. Boomholzer is correct about the ability of rangefinders, but the Leica will use the best laser of all the range finders out there. You wont be able to range an elk out to the maximum range on any rangefinder. You will get greater ranging distances through the Leica though. You definitely wont be able to range a deer 1200 yards away but you will for sure beat 450 yards. Not sure on the exact distance though. The binocular/rangefinder concept in my mind is only worth it if you get the Leica Geovid. Most others are lacking quality of either the two. While the Geovids have superb quality in both. So the Quest may not be a good choice.

The guys on the long-range shooting boards swear "up and down" by the Leica rangefinder over the YP-1000 and Newcon models or most anything else for that matter.

I've tried the Newcon LRM1500 and now own a Bushnell YP-1000, it is limited to a advertised 500yards for deer.

I am not all that impressed with the YP-1000, I have a hard time ranging on small targets. Its still way better than the Newcon.  I kinda expect it to range everything at any distance which is unfair.

i have the leica 1200, and it is awesome, ive used it up to 500 yards one deer, but thats it, to get a reading at 700 yards, i had to park a tractor out there, and read it on that, i guess it was more reflective, or something, it might have jsut been that green paint.

I just put a Newcon on eBay.  We bought one a while back for evaluation and this is the unit, brand new in the box.

No reserver and no minimum.
