I have a Remington 700 .308 that I would like to put a good straight 10 power by 40mm scope on. For under $300 wat is my best option?
Thanks, Capn Jack

Or a variable scope such as 3.5-10 would be a choice also.

SWFA has the Weaver V-10 (2~10x38) at $159.95 or the V-16 (4~16x42) for $289.95. Either should suit your needs.

Look at Nikon Buckmasters.  Great scopes.

Or Super Sniper if you go fixed.

Or lighter 10x one inch tube scopes are: Bushnell 3200 or look at new Weaver Grand Slam 10x Tactical or variables...a bit more than 300.00, tho.

Welcome to Optics Talk, Cap'n.

What type of shooting are you considering?

If at first you don't secede...try..try again.

A straight 10x for varmits and paper shooting,,,OK!..........All around hunting,,,NO!

The best scope you are going to find for under $300 is the Bushnell Elite 4200 in the 3x9. There is not going to be that much difference between a 3x9 vs a 3.5x10 or a 2.5x10.

Better to go with the best possible optics in your price range. The 3x9 4200 with Rainguard is going to be your best choice for under $300............

Ditto
What else can I say? I love Weaver products but if you have a $300 budget and SWFA still has a few of those 3-9x4200 Bushnell 4200s then buy one. It's definitely a step up in optical quality.

Welcome to Optics Talk, Cap'n.

What type of shooting are you considering?

mainly hunting. some target shooting. I have read since posting my first question that a straight power scope is not optimal, so a better question would be what scope for under three hundred would fit my needs?

I agree....a 10x would NOT be optimal for hunting.  For under $300, its pretty hard to find a better deal than the 4200 3-9X40 or if they are still available, the Nikon Primos 3-9X40.  The Primos has the fancy reticle which I'm not a big fan of, but if that doesn't bother you, it's a great deal!

If you decide that you can spend a bit more, I highly recommend the Conquest 3-9X40 and its 4 inches of eye relief!

Good luck and good hunting!    BTW... fall is just around the corner.
take em!
