Hello Folks,
As you can see I am a new member to OpticsTalk and also new to tactical rifle shooting. I recently purchased a DPMS LR 308 with the 24" fluted barrel to move into tactical shooting. I am a hand gun hunter and have used them with scopes in the past, but now I shoot iron sights only.
My question is, what is best for this perticular rifle and best to learn to shoot long distance? I hope to some day be able to reach 600 yards consistantly. 75% of my shooting with this rifle will be at the range, the other hunting.
I want but can not afford an IOR, I would like to keep it around $500 or less. I think having side focus would be helpful, as I wear glasses and definantly a Mil-Dot rectical in a 30mm tube.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated

Welcome to The OT!!
A couple of questions for you.
1) What type of "hunting" are you contemplating?
Deer, varmint, etc?
2) Is a 30mm tube really necessary?

I deer hunt with a 45acp, but may try with my new set up at longer distances. The reason I would perfer a scope with a 30mm tube is that I already have a set of medium XTR rings. I had a used IOR 2.5x10x42 Illum. lined up and the seller decided to put it on a gun he had for sale instead of selling it to me. I was very disapointed that I did not get that $1100 scope for $500. With me just buying the 308, I don't have the funds to send over the $500 I was going to give for the IOR. The dealer with the IOR told me for $500 or less the SS 10x42 was the best out there. I'm just a little worried that a fixed 10x scope will make it hard to deer hunt in the south Ga. woods. The longest shot I would have is right at 100 yards, maybe 150. I am pretty good with my 45acp out to 50 or 60 yds. I have taken deer at 70 or 80 yds with my 870 and sabot slugs, but mostly it will be used at the range. I've read that 10x is good out to 600yds, in the right hands of course and some folks even further.
Thanks for any advice, GuytonSqHunter (Joel)

500$... Does it have to be one scope? You want to do two things. I'd say Super Sniper and then, you could get a set of rings that would let you mount a red dot on top.

Hunt deer with .45ACP, nice!
A 10x SS would go nicely on the rifle. At what range do you plan to hunt? 10x is a bit much for a 75-yard shot. |

Yes and I do that with 185 grain Winchester Silver Tips, 2 of the deer that I've killed the jacket separated from the core and made a very nasty wound cavity. None have existed the deer and delivered all of it's energy to drop them where they were standing. Usual shot placement is just back of the shoulder, half way between the spine and the heart. Drpos them like a rock, but I don't shots over 40 or 50 yrds. I live with my 5" very close at hand daily.

If you only need to go out to 100 Im thinking aimpoint:
As for traditional scopes that you could use hunting:
As far as true tactical scopes - ??? Well there is the $299 super sniper as you know and from there you could go up to a target type scope

A fixed 10x for hunting in the woods ?????? Obviously not many have hunted in the woods/brush ! No way .... boy will you be sorry for alot of reasons . Man I hope none of your game will be moving and there's no trees or brush in your area . Wait until you'd try a short shot in " the woods " with a 10x fixed .... you'd be better off throwing the rifle at it .

+1... a fixed 10x is no scope for "hunting in the woods". If you are sitting on a pipeline, with a long range view and don't intend to do anything else, maybe. But still not a good choice. Merc nailed it.

Thanks to all who replyed, I purchased a Falcom Menace 4.5x18x56 for my new LR 308. I will eventually move it to my AR 15 and buy the IOR that I want when funds are better.

I have not had a chance to look over the Menace but the info on it looks good, I'm just a tad concerned that it wont hold up well usually when the price sounds too good to be true there is a reason why. So let us know how your experience goes.

Yes, when my wife unpacked and looked thru it she described what looked like 2 chips in the upper left fifld of view. She could not tell if it was on the back side of the 1st lens or on the 2nd lens, but that it was chipped. She said when looking at a bright light they seemed to glow brighter than the retical. I bought it from a guy on ebay that stated it was new and my wife said it looked new also. I bought it because every one else is stock out. Then I asked her what the part number and serial number was, she told me the s/n was 00042 and that worried me. I don't know when they started production, but it's on of the first batch. I called the guy and he said ship it back and he would take care of it, I hope he keeps his word and give me a refund.

my first post here, an I guess I'm jumping into hot water ! I use 10x fixed most of the time in the woods , I have variables but keep them set on 9(if heighest setting)or ten x. my favorite is the burris xtr fixed ten. with a.o.set on about 300yd. close shots are no prob. I also carry a handgun when hunting , mostly in case I set that rifle down (which l try, never to do.)Also hunt with only a handgun often.

You hunt...in the woods...with a fixed 10x??
You wouldn't want to try that in MY WOODS, my friend.

The Burris is a fine tactical scope. I have to commend you there. You should try using the lower powers in your variables, this will actually help you IMMENSELY in the hunting applications that you mentioned. The parralax adjustment staying set is a slight problem in that it should be returned to the highest setting before being put away. The tension spring will be very happy if you do this. It also keeps things in a moveable state.
Welcome to the OT.

Is this a good idea with all parralax adjustable scopes or just the Burris? |

All of my scopes that are adjustable parralax have something written in the scopes brochure. Some are going to say set it at high, and some will say the lowest setting.
