    Posted: August/06/2008 at 13:06
A Swedish(?) magazine named VAPEN published the following information about several rifle scopes in 2004. A friend, a Swedish mathematician, interpreted the headings on the results chart for me. I don't recall having seen the information on this forum and thought it might be of interest the some of you. The chart headings were:

Synfält = field of vision (large diameter -> higher points)
Ögonavstånd = distance from the scope to the eye (large distance -> high points)
Tubseende = tube vision (little or no tube vision effect -> high points)
Ergonomi = ergonomics (easy to handle and adjust -> high points)
Riktmedelsjustering =  accuracy and range for calibration of the scope (high accuracy + large range -> high points)
Träfflägesförändring = target distance change; ease of estimating the distace to the target. (highest points to all tested scopes)
Skärpa/upplösning = clarity/resolution
Färg/kontrast = Color/contrast
Motljusegenskaper = against the light character (i.e.. how good the scope works when you are aiming towards the light source; bright light and twilight)
Ljustransmission = light transmission (9=90_95%, 8=85_90%, 7=80_85%, etc)
Skymningsegenskaper = twilight characters visible.

I apologize for the poor alignment of the data.
I sorted the data in order of the number of characters seen in twilight:
The Scope                              Sy     Og     Tu     Er     Rl     Tr     S/u     F/k     Mo               Lj     Sk

So where the tests done with a machine or just with the magazine writers eyes/opinions?
Lifetime warranty and excellent customer service don't mean a thing when your gun fails during a zombie attack.

Find it hard to believe that a Burris FF2 is where it is in that pack of scopes.

Aerotech Telub lab did the scientific testing using a spectrophotometer, lamps with broad spectral characteristics, light meters, etc.

It was a lab test for riflescopes suitable for hunting. The test was intended to evaluate scopes for hunting in dark, autumn evenings.

The scopes were tested for field of view, eye relief, "tube effect", ergonomics, click adjustment accuracy, impact change with change of magnification, sharpness and contrast, light transmission, effectiveness of anti-reflective coatings, and for twilight performance.

Scoring followed the following guidelines:

Field of view at 100m          Eye relief
0-5m 0 points               0-6cm 0 points
5-6m 1 point               6-8cm 1 point
6-7m 2 points               8-10 2 points
7m+ 3 points               10+ 3 points

Tube effect
Sight picture severly disturbed by tube effect at all magnifications: 0 points
Sight picture severly disturbed at lowest magnification, disturbed at highest: 1 point
Sight picture distusturbed at all magnifications: 2 points
Sight picture disturbed only at lowest magnification: 3 points
Sight picture not disturbed: 4 points

Ergonomics
Magnification ring turns smooth and even: 1 point
Possible to read magnification marking in the dark: 1 point
Quick and smooth focusing: 1 point
Possible to click scope without tools: 1 point
Click adjustment easy to feel: 1 point
Good markings on all adjustments: 1 point
Indication of scope center: 1 point

Sight adjustment
Click adjustment deviation in percent
100-50% 0 points
50-20% 1 point
20-5% 2 points
5-1% 3 points
0% 4 points

Adjustment range at 100m
0-50cm 0 points
50-100cm 1 point
100-200cm 2 points
200-300cm 3 points
300cm+ 4 points

Change of impact with magnification at 100m
More than 5cm - 0 points
From 5cm to 1 cm - 1 point
From 0 to 1cm - 2points
No change - 3points

Resolution and contrast
Measured under field conditions: can/cannot see various targets, details and colors under equal lighting conditions and settings
Resolution 0-5 points
Contrast 0-5 points

Anti-reflective coatings
Measured under equal conditions and settings with the light source facing the objective lens.

Lenses
Unable to see through scope: 0 points
Sight picture is white, difficult to aim: 1 point
Sight picture is white, but aiming possible: 2 points
Sight picture a little white: 3 points
Sight picture good, but without contrast or color: 4 points
Sight picture not affected: 5 points

Reticle
Not able to use the reticle: 0 points
Severe shadows and reflected light on it: 1 point
Shadows and some reflected light on it: 2 points
A little shiny: 3 points
Sharp but mis-colored: 4 points
Sharp and black: 5 points

Light transmission was measured at 500-550 nm (twilight)
Note that some scopes can transmit other wavelengths of light better

0-10% 0 points
10-30% 1 point
30-40% 2 points
40-50% 3 points
50-60% 4 points
60-70% 5 points
70-80% 6 points
80-85% 7 points
85-90% 8 points
90-95% 9 points
95-100% 10 points

Twilight performance
Light was progressively reduced and scopes were excluded when it was no longer possible to determine target/crosshairs. Lighted reticules
were not used. Scopes were evaluated at all magnifications. Scopes were given 0 to 10 points according to how many characters (0-10) could be seen.

The test was done in 2004. They scored miserably on ergonomics, but not badly on other things. Their anti-reflective coatings appear to leave something to be desired given that they only received a 4+2 instead of a 4+4.

Tom, thank you for posting this for us all.
It's appreciated, but it will be scrutinized by the locals here. These types of charts ALWAYS are. Wink

You are welcome.

I can't vouch safe the posting because I can not read Swedish, but I think it is correct. I hope that the data are evaluated for accuracy and things that are incorrect be corrected. These are the kinds of data that help us make informed decisions.

Look on the bright side: If it is severe enough, since you won't be able to stand or walk, you can just enjoy the forum for an extended period.

That ought to be a pretty good test then if they done it on a machine.  That is cool, I was hoping it was.
The BUrris surprised me too, but Chris has said the old Burris scopes were much better.

Thanks for posting that, we ought to post all that info on a stick page a long with the SWFA scale.  The more of those we have the better decisions we can make.

As long as you stay away from the 3-9 and the short mag Burris has good glass to my eyes. My 4.5-14 FFII is just barley under my 3-9 zeiss and much better than either of my vxIII Leupolds.
