If you want the sun to look very large in a photo you use a high powered telephoto lens. No matter what you do it is almost impossible to accurately capture the true beauty of a sunset because film only has a latitude of about 4 to 5 f stops and digital is only slightly better. Color transparency film (slide film) is often the most accurate for this but it is difficult to find a lab that does good reversal prints and as digital grows it will become a lost art. If your camera allows you to control over and under exposure (exposure compensation) you can adjust what you get and the other thing you can do is adjust the image with filters and by adding flash to ballance the foreground with the background. A really good photo has foreground subject and background like a painting. Nice sunset keep up your photography. |

U,
You could still send slide direct to Kodak with a mailer. They can do medium format if you make the arangements. Slide like to be a bit underexposed for color saturation, thus sunsets come out great.
Digital likes to be a hair underexposed. If you play with the focus zone, those also set the exposure. You could mess with the light tempeture setting, but I don't think you will like what you get. See where the program setting put you and use your own judgement.

I don't have a huge telephoto lense on the camera and I hate using digital zoom. Everything else can be manually changed on the camera. I will keep playing around with the settings and take some more sunset pics. You guys can let me know what I am doing wrong with it. Thanks for all the tips!

That wheat field is out my back door. I can walk right up to it. If I get another good sunset to night, I might go out in the pasture and see what pics I can get.

Try climbing up on a ladder or something when you shoot. "Clamp" the camera down to the ladder so you do not induce motion to the picture.
If you are better at photchop than I am then you can add layers. I'd start shooting a bit sooner in the day. Start shooting early in the morning for the reverse.
In the old days, of just a few years ago, you could have rented a medium format film camera that took panoramic pictures. Then you get into some VERY cool vistas.

Beautiful pictures, Helo. Post more.
My wife suggested setting up on a tripod, setting f/16-f/22 and experimenting with exposure time using a starlight filter. |

I will put it on the highest f stop i can. Not sure how high the digital will go. Don't have a starlight filter either, but I will play with a few other setting to see what happens.

I have a few things I can climb. A silo, or loader bucket in the air. My brother played with some medium format camera a couple years ago. Got some great pics. I am waiting for the sunset tonight. Looks like there might be a storm building too, so it could make for some great pics if I can get the setting right.

I am spoiled to live out here. Montana is such a beautiful state! Didn't get any pics of the sunset tonight. Storm covered it all. Will try again tomorrow.
