I am scoping a Charles Daly 458WM.  I will be using it at the range, going after close range deer with powder puff loads, and someday Africa.

What is the difference between the Rifleman Shotgun / Muzzleloader Scope, VX-I Shotgun / Muzzleloader, and the VX-II Riflescopes (as listed below)?

Can you see a difference when using the scope?

Then we get into the details of the first group of scopes, What is the differences?

 LEU61570 Leupold 2-7x33 Rifleman Shotgun / Muzzleloader Scope $189

LEU61575 Leupold 2-7x33 Rifleman Shotgun / Muzzleloader Scope $199

LEU58800 Leupold 2-7x33 VX-I Shotgun / Muzzleloader Scope for $199

LEU56730 Leupold 2-7x33 VX-II Riflescope for $299

Then there is the Long Range Duplex, which I was thinking about.  Will I be able to tell the difference in these scopes.

LEU61270 Leupold 2-7x33 VX-II Riflescope $329

LEU61250 Leupold 2-7x33 VX-I Riflescope $219

Right now the top contender is LEU61250 Leupold 2-7x33 VX-I Riflescope $219.  I like my mil dot scopes.  I plan on using multiple loads (HOT hunter Africa DG, powder puff range & Deer).

..................Rather than go over all of the differences in the above scopes and to be very honest, I wouldn`t choose any of them to mount aboard a 458 Win. Mag.

Here`s why!

First of all, even though you can use a 2x7, that variable imo, is over scoping that rifle. A 458 Win . Mag is a short to modest range "dangerous game rifle." A 2x7 is better suited for a medium to longer range cartridge. Heck! I`ve seen 2x7`s on 30-06`s and 7/08`s and 243`s etc. A 2x7 is a better variable power for those.

For Africa and even over here, a much better choice would be a lower variable, a faster (both eyes open) aiming scope, with a wider FOV than that of a 2x7. You certainly

I think Big Squeez is right about scope choice.  I would look at at 1-4x or similarly configured scope (as a matter of clarification the SIghtron S2 Big Sky mentioned above is a 1.25-5x20 and would work fine).  For your rifle, I would make sure the scope has good eye-relief and a thick and very visible reticle for quick target acquisition.

If you are intent on staying with a Leupold, I would not get anything below VX-2.  I am not a big fan of Leupold, but VX-1 and Rifleman scopes are an insult to Leupold's good name.  VX-2 and VX-3, while probably not the best bang for the buck, are good lineups with many available configurations.

Leupold has a 2 3/4 fixed.  That is what you want for that rifle.

Because your advice is conflicting with another forum populated by hunter who have been to Africa, I have to ask, who here has a dangerous game rifle?  Have you used it for hunting dangerous game?

99% of my deer hunting is 150yards or less.  I have done it with multiple rifles most of which were scoped where the low end of the scope power was 4 or 3.  Some of these shots were up close brush shots.  I am having a hard time imagining hunting where 2x is too much and 1x is right.

My reason for thinking Leupold was the free replacement and services.  I assume if I shake it loose, I will talk to Leupold and see about an upgrade at that time.  But I am willing to look at other vendors, if there are better suggestions.

I am going cheap because I really can’t afford it right now.  I assume this will become the backup sight when/if I get to Africa.  I am having a hard time imagining significant optics qualities on a 1x or 2x sight.  If I buy a 1x or 2x VX-1 and VX-2 and VX-3 am I going to see a difference?  Will it be light transmission?  Will it be clarity of focus?

The VX-III will have better contrast, resolution and light transmission than the VX-I and II. I think ILya's suggestion to consider the VX-II as start is a good one.

The 1.4x20 VX-II gives you 75' FOV at 1.4x and the 2-7x33 42.5'. This is no big deal for deer in the woods. For dangerous game it is substantial.

I had the 1.5-5 VariX-III on my .375 H&H for a time and it worked fine. I still removed it after I went into the thick stuff after a bear I had shot. I like the unencumbered peripheral view with irons. Some people are very comfortable with a 1-1.5x scope for close encounters and 75' FOV is big compared to 42'.

The difference will be, first and foremost, in the quality of the image you see: clarity and resolution.  Optical quality matters even on low magnification scopes and really adds to the versatility of the set-up.

Whether 2x is not too much for you is a personal choice.  Some people have a hard time shooting fast with 2x with both eyes open and some are perfectly comfortable with it.  It is a personal choice.

Roll%20Eyes Cheap and 458 do not go together... Don't skimp on scopes or recoil pads.

Yea, I know.  If I didn't have most of this setup already I wouldn't be finishing it off.

Please define resolution and contrast.  I understand the terms from computers, but I am not sure how they work in scopes.

Case in point one of my best friends was hunting Africa and during the night a lioness came into camp stalking him.  Sandy hunts with a double rifle with express sights. The lioness is full mounted in his den as is a Leopard.  Dangerous game guns are made for close quarters life or death situations if your experience is not in hunting something that also hunts you you have to adjust to the correct mind set.  Personally I would choose

Resolution and contrast apply to any type of image regarding how clear and how sharp the image looks. Really low resolution and contrast is the glass in the shower door. My thought on this is possibly the .458 is not the right rifle for you and you might be happier owning a cartridge that would be more useful on North American game like say a long action 30-06 or 270 or a short action in .308 or 260 Rem or 7mm08. These cartridges are a lot less expensive to shoot and a lot less punishing.  I  had a .458  and  a few years back I came to the conclusion that I cant afford the cost of hunting Africa so I traded off the .458
I do still have a .375 H&H but it translates better to Elk and Bears which are on this continent.

The 458 should have open sights - a while back I came to the realization that some rifles were just ment to be used with open sights,  I think the advantage of a scope for that gun is the availablity of illuminated reticles for things that go bump in the night.

I have a Ruger #1 in .458 Lott that, to the dismay of many, I hunt deer, and other creatures, with. It has become my favorite hunting rifle. I have had it scoped with 2 different 4x scopes and find the 4x quite adequate for any type shots I might want to take (it was better with a S&B, but I sold that one). I actually prefer the iron sights for this rifle and will probably "unscope" it. I find it is good out to 300yds with no problems. I have not yet fired it at 500, but intend to...just for grins.
I shoot 458WinMag as "light loads" for this rifle. The Winchester 510gr are deadly accurate to 300yds, as far as I have tested them. It IS expensive shooting... you may can afford it, but I don't bang away at the range much with this rifle. I recommend no more than 4x IF you must scope it, and believe fixed is better than variable for this type of rifle. As I mentioned, I will probably go back to the iron sights on mine (with a fiber optic front sight for use in low light conditions).
A number of people have told me "you ain't right", but I love this rifle. It has incredible flexibility, is superbly accurate, and, for me, just plain fun to shoot.
Opinion,untempered by fact,is ignorance.
