Is the 1x4 Nikko Stirling Illuminated scope with Jap glass worth a darn?

I guess that is a matter of perception. I dont think you would be happy with it on an AR,
but somebody that didnt know the difference would probably think it was awesome and it should be a useful inexpensive hunting quality scope - but not combat optic quality.  What are you thinking of putting it on and what do you want the optic to be able to do?  As for low power scopes my preference runs to Aimpoint and Trijicon although I have a Burris 1x that is really sturdy.  How about this:\

What makes you think it has Japanese glass?

It looks to be made in the same place in China as Millett DMS-1.  I have seen several variations of this scope by a few companies with minor cosmetic difference.  If that is the type of the scope you want in this price range, just get the DMS-1.  Millett is pushing the factories on QC all the time, so DMS scopes are pretty sturdy.  With Nikko-Sterling, I have no insight on how particular they are about QC.
