Where's the media asking the tough questions about why the federal government hasn't solved the problem? Asking where the FEMA trucks (and trailers) are? Why isn't the Federal Government relocating When will Spike Lee say that the Federal Government blew up the levees that failed in Where are Sean Penn and the Dixie Chicks? Where are all the looters stealing high-end tennis shoes and big screen television sets? When will we hear Governor Chet Culver say that he wants to rebuild a 'vanilla' Where is the hysterical 24/7 media coverage complete with reports of cannibalism? Where are the people declaring that George Bush hates white, rural people? How come in 2 weeks, you will never hear about the There's a big difference between in the people of Edited by Chris Farris - July/29/2008 at 14:37 |

Yea I was talking to one of my friends in Iowa Homeland Security Emergency Management Division yesterday and he was saying that a lot of the piles of debree have been cleaned up and a lot of work has been done to restore things that were reported damaged so when FEMA goes out to look and the repair work is already done and things are cleaned up they have dificulty believing that there was damage, if it was Lousiana they would still be waiting for someone to do it for them. My friend who works for Dept of Agriculture in the Cedar Rapids area says there are about 1300 totally trashed homes where nothing is left but the basement and the fire dept is currently pumping water out of them cause they are still looking for 85 or so bodies that have not been recovered. Des Moines was better prepared than it would have been if the Flood of 93 had not caused some major changes. Thing is we are still getting hammered by rain every few days and the ground is totally soaked and we have been having high winds and tornados. One of the FEMA teams was from Puerto Rico and the sheriff kept getting calls about a bunch of mexicans out there trying to pull some kind of scam when in reality it was FEMA people trying to do papework for them to get federal aid.
It has been a circus with a lot of money spent (some of it questionably) and it is clear that FEMA is not as organised as it should be. The roadway is washed out by the emergency spill way at Saylorvill Dam right next to Iowa National Guard and Homeland Security Headquarters. FEMA hired a bunch of ex-cops for something and had Federal Protective Service qualify them on our range - they thought all of them would have their own guns .40 S&W or 9mm or something - only one of the guys showed up with a gun and it was a 44 mag Desert Eagle --NO NO NO. So they snagged some old .38s from somewhere and qualified them on those after several days
Well I'm sure the fence washed out again - I just kind of dread going to the farm I keep waiting for it to dry up Edited by Urimaginaryfrnd - July/29/2008 at 15:41 |

This thread hits me close to home, as many of you know.
As hard as these floods were to endure, it was a truly wonderful thing to see how people in the Heartland pull together and work through it, side by side, as friends and neighbors.
Heck, some of us Badgers even helped out some FLATLANDERS from Illinois, with nary a disparaging remark!
That took some discipline, I'm telling you...

Without sounding like a .....
The mindset of the people involved. Like Mississippians, Iowans take responsiblity and control of their own lives. Therefore, the mind set is "I'll pick myself up, if you give me a hand "Thank you" if you don't, I'll do it myself." Different backgrounds have totally different responses. I'll second that CT "God Bless them" Edited for Capitalization of Mississippi!!! I don't want to a awakened by cow bells at 2 AM. Edited by Steelbenz - July/29/2008 at 23:50 |

Thanks for reminding us of our fellow citizens, Chris. For those of you who would like to help - my church ( United Methodist ) puts togeher " Flood Buckets " and gives them to victims of floods, Hurricanes , etc... . A flood bucket is a 5 gallon bucket filled with gloves, towels, cleaning supplies and you get the picture. If any of you would like the list on what all can fit in one of these buckets, I'll be glad to supply you a list for you, your church etc .
If you want to see a grown man cry, just give him one of these kits in time of need.

Good post, Chris! Raises some very valid points about the entitlement mentality.
Ron, we're glad to hear things are getting back to normal!

We all know why there's a big difference ... but I probably can't elaborate deeply because I may offend some of the other folks . The people of Iowa and the areas alike are good ... honest ... hard working folks who got where they are through the descent old ways of
hard -earned on their own struggling and sacrafice through the hard knocks of life ... without relying on govt. handouts and living off the taxpayer . They work ... they save .. and they help each other when the time comes . They did'nt sit on their rears and demand the rest of us rush millions in to give them checks to spend on boom boxes and designer chlothes as was showed on the news in louisiana ! I don't know the gentleman ... Ronk ... but he did what all of those others should have in the other area ... he did it himself with the help of friends and did'nt lay in a hotel for a year in a luxury suite and do NOTHING !
He and the folks like him showed the world what real americans are all about ! That is REAL America ... NOT the inner city viewpoint of " You owe us everything and we want it for free and we don't have to earn anything " . I'm so sick of them telling me and the rest of us we owe them the world and more for what happened 200 years ago ! Let them get off their lazy a** es and get out there and struggle like we did ! How many of them did you see rebuilding their OWN houses ... instead of a million man march ... where was the million man work team ? Edited by mercenary1947 - July/30/2008 at 10:09 |
