Hey, Craig, where did they get the elk stock in order to breed with their local red deer?  I didn't know NZ had elk in addition to red deer.
 
I shot a red deer hind (what females are called) on a ranch here in Texas once.  Probably weighed around 300 lbs., basically a solid red colored miniature elk.

Like all other mammals over there Ted they imported them for sportsman.  I believe I was told the stock came from the US.
 
Over there they call them by the Indian name - Wapiti.
