I just sold a scope to fund my new rifle . So I have a rifle that I need to replace a scope on. It will be my son's rifle in a few years.........my wife's father gave it to me (Steyr Model L .6mm ). I don't use the gun anymore but want a descent scope on it ..........just in case I may use it and mostly for when he get's ready for it !!

I am not confident with the gun over 200 yrds !! It has a wierd trigger system and narrow stock...........plus it's light !! In a good vise I can shoot well with it to 300 yrds but outside a vise I can't shoot confidently over 200 !!

So I have pretty much decided on 2 scopes right now.................Kahles Helia C 6x42 #7 used or a new Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 #4 ! We just deer hunt .

I am leaning toward the Kahles but not sure !! I feel like for a kid that a fixed power makes things simpler .......but am open to advise !!

I like the Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 #4 choice myself. IMHO, variable power scopes are a better all around choice for deer hunting.

I agree, especially if you are not doing a lot of "snap shot" stalk hunting. The variable provides more flexibility. And, you can just adjust to one of the middle magnifications and leave it there, if that is needed. Just an opinion.
Opinion,untempered by fact,is ignorance.

Given your requirements have you looked at the Conquest 1.8-5.5x38?  with it you can fully crank it up and be very close to the Kahles, this would male it easy on your son to go full power when hunting and lower power when learning about the gun.
