...........Ok guys! A S/A BFR is the one!...........Which caliber? I don`t want the 475 Linebaugh or the 50 AE........The 444 Marlin is only available in 10" ......According to Magnum Research, their 460 S&W will, like the Smith, shoot the 454 Casull and the 45 LC..........Let me see what the esteemed resident experts, fellow projectile slingers and my OT forum collegues think!!!................

So you have ruled out the 458 Lott?
At some point the gun can only burn so much powder. Besides most states won't let you hunt with a flame thrower.
You need a good level of control with a handgun. You want something that is easy to carry and points real, real fast. It's power,(+) speed (+) and accuracy not just power alone.

How`s about you Pyro???...........Where`s that .375??? Any 375!! Those Minn. deer are really gettin thick skinned up there! In fact, they just may need the .378 Wby!!!......The 375 Ruger is too wimpy round for anything, so that`s definetly out! The 375 H&H is soooo much better, but you should really go for a .378 as your go to deer rifle!.....You`ll really impress your camp buds!!...............Your camp buddies!. ......

i had thought about the .416 rigby or the .458 lott at one point in time, but then i thought to hell with the rigby, over $100 for 50 pieces of brass, and the lott is a powerhouse to much for me, im not so sure i could even handle a .375

Freedom Arms? Nope!............I prefer more power of the longer cylindered rounds that Freedom Arms, nor Ruger chamber! Furthermore, I cannot see or justify another additional $1000-$1500 in cost vs the BFR`s..........I have handled both, played with them, pointed them, dry fired them for trigger comparison, checked for grip comfort and there is no way that the added cost of a Freedom Arms is justified. Within a $100 to $300 of each other??....Then? Maybe so!....Sorry!..........The extra dimensions and weight (for a revolver that is), will not bother me.

I voted .460 and did not comment. Now that I have looked into it, I see the .460 uses the long cylinder of the rifle rounds. I'll take the 45/70 in that case.
I have a 7 1/2" FA 83 Field Grade in .454 and love it. It is a pain to shoot but is very portable and extremely well made. I can't get a .001" feeler in on any of the chambers. There is no perceptible cylinder play. I bought mine used for $900 and consider it a steal. Since this is about hunting revolvers in BFR, the size of that gun is not a problem. It's not a hip gun but can be carried across the chest in a bandolier holster or with a sling under the arm. I have long barreled Contenders and have gone back and forth between both. I like the bandolier better, now. But I digress, sorry. Edited by tahqua - July/13/2008 at 12:33 |

At 6'3" and 240 lbs w/ 7% body fat, (BIG SQUEEEEEZE), I don`t need to worry about recoil. The BFR is for me, a practical revolver. A real man`s revolver, not some `ol school revolver! Hurt myself with a 500 or your little pip squeek hot loaded 329 44 mag?? Not a prayer and not on your life!....Not looking for resale value or reputation either. Show me someone who has a BFR that broke, and I`ll show ya a FA revolver that probably broke too!.................John Taffin I believe, it could have been someone else, wrote a very interesting article on the BFR 45-70 several years back. Thousands of hot loaded rounds without one problem!....Like I said before, the 45-70 can be hot loaded at much lower pressures while exceeding the 454 performance, but only in the BFR, with less recoil than a 454! F/Arms does not make a 45-70 anyway!

I'm not that big guys, (6'0" 225) but I still love sporting a 454. I don't carry that when deer hunting, but when I'm in the mountains on the lease in Ellijay, there are bears and cougars. The 454 or the 44 mag are just the ticket. Neither is too much of a burden to carry. It ain't the Rockies though, but still mountainous terrain. The rest of the time it's the 45ACP, or the 357.

The people in Wyoming think the folks in Denver are flatlanders.....and Ya gotta go DOWNHILL to get to Montana ( except for Cooke City) !! What about them folks who live down in Florida.....they're practically UNDERWATER at High Tide!! (We ain't even gonna talk about them Mosquito Baits from EAST TEXAS!!! )

I don`t take steroids! Never have!.......Don`t want a 50 caliber in a FA or otherwise!.......You`re the one who said and thinks that I can`t handle the recoil of your lil pip squeak 44, when I have a friend that has the same one you have!.......I`ll load hay, unload hay, climb any mountain, climb down any mountain, hunt where you hunt, shoot what you shoot, get on any horse, get off any horse! You name it there,,,,, `ol timer!.......Never said I was right on every subject! You did! Have fun fly fishing. Try not to hook yer you know what!.... SO! That altitude of 8K ft. is in your back yard ay?
Spend much time up there Dawes? I knew there was something wrong with you! Its called oxygen deprivation!.............................................. Edited by cyborg - August/28/2008 at 14:23 |

Hey Y'all,
Remind me again, where did I sign the book, Oh yea, top of Mt. Whitney! I think that's a little closer to Anahiem than Wyoming. Trivia note, Mt. Whitney is the highest point in the lower 48, less than 100 miles from Badwater basin in death valley, the lowest point in the Continential US.
