on the older model Ruger M77 with the tang safety - can an average joe adjust the trigger or does it need a gunsmith

h,if you'll look up into the trigger assembly inside the trigger guard you'll see a set screw. I've got one of those old Rugers and supposedly that set screw is for adjusting trigger pull wt. Mine doesn't seem to do a thing and I even had the darn screw completely out. You can try yours and maybe it will work. If not you may have two options,a gunsmith or an aftermarket trigger. I honestly don't know if an aftermarket one is offered or not. The rifle I have is my daughters,so I haven't bothered with any trigger fix options as it's good enough for hunting.

For the extra $100 for an aftermarket trigger you might as well get a Winchester ( back when then still made them......which they are again, I'm told....)

I would look into an after-market Timney trigger. Most Ruger triggers are not easily adjusted without some 'stoning'. An after-market trigger is an easy fix.

Timney is definitely a good option.  You will be far better off going with and after market rather than trying to diddle with that Ruger mechanism.  It is not expensive for the Timney, I have installed several.  They are actually adjustable to about 1.5lb pull and still very crisp. I would not take a Timney below 1.5, but know some people who have and they don't seem to have a problem.

I can also recommend Rifle Basix triggers.

Aside from a new trigger. I would take the trigger mech, out and polish the seer, and hammer where they connect.  Use a drimmel tool with a soft, soft polishing end, and this should help you.  I have a Ruger M77 243, 30-06 and 7mm mag, and this has helped tremendously.
