Same size tubes, power settings, etc. Does a regular 50mm objective VX3 'Gather more light' (I can think of a better way to ask the question) than a 50mm VXL objective? |

I doubt it as a VXL is a better scope with better glass so it will be brighter.

The VXL will utilize the light better than the VXIII, as Supertool pointed out the better glass will make a difference, in useable light and clarity. I think the coatings might also be different as well.

I thought the VX-L had identical glass to the VX3. Just has the pooper scouper objective housing. The also use the pooper scouper housing on the 56mm VX-7's and they would be brighter.
Roy
According to this scale they are in the same catagory.

The VX-L has the Exterior Diamond lens coating. This gives it an edge on the VX-III. Other than that as far as I know the glass is the same in the two.

Funny this was brought up. There was a Leupold fan that was telling people that Diamond Coat was made with real diamonds on another site.

The Diamond Coatings is also suppose to be scratch resistant. Which is where the name Diamondcoat came from seeing as Diamonds are the hardest glass. It is though just a coating.

The VX-L does have the Diamondcoat lens coating on the exterior lens surfaces (2). This coating was developed specifically for the now discontinued LPS, which was to be Leupold's entry into the Euro class scope market. The VX-L also has beefed up windage and elevation adjustments that are stainless steel and titanium-nitride coated. They are also filled with Argon/Krypton vs. just plain old nitrogen in the VX-III.
I can not see a difference in these scopes optically in regards to clarity or light transmission. Leupold boast that the VX-III has up to 98% light transmission and there is no such thing as 100% light transmission in a scope, so IF the VX-L is brighter then it is only 1% brighter and if they have achieved 99% light transmission it would be in 50pt font on the front of their catalog. Light transmission is not a regulated statistic and there are several ways of coming up with a number. You can shoot light through one lens that has the best coatings on it, like the objective and take your measurement there (which is what almost everyone does) or you can get the true number by shooting a light beam through the entire scope and measure it at the exit pupil, which some companies used to do but it made them look bad compared to the companies doing it the deceptive way. Bottom line is that you can not trust light transmission statistics that are provided by the manufacture. Note that Leupold claims UP TO 98% light transmission.
The VX-L is all about having the ability to mount a large objective low on your rifle, the rest of the difference between them and the VX-III are more for marketing and price tag justification. Granted the manufacturing process is significantly higher in the VX-L.
If you have a need for a very low light scope and need it to be mounted low then the VX-L is the way to go. A 56mm VX-L mounts as low as a 40mm VX-III.

600$?? Good grief Ed, you need to shop around a little.
Will the 56L really get down to the normal 40 height? I thought the 50L=normal 40 and the 56L=normal 50.

Chris, it's the use of real diamond dust that boosts light transmission upward of 98%. I'll bet you didn't know that.

That's good to know.
But it makes me curious. With many shooters willing to use scopes at the normal 50mm height, why stop at the 56L? I'd think a 70L would have the "bigger is better" crowd going
