    Posted: June/21/2008 at 15:13
I am looking to purchase a new scope for my 338 win.  The VX I 1-4X20, that is on the rifle now, is not the clearest of scopes that I have looked through.  I am looking for a low powered scope, with maybe a little more power on the high end than the 1-4 that's on there now.  I have in mind the leupold VXIII 1.5-5X20 or the link below.  I like the idea of the zeiss that I've linked below, but haven't heard much about this particular scope.  I know the 3-9X40 is well liked, but wanted some feedback, if possible, on the 1.8-5.5X38.  Thanks.http://www.swfa.com/pc-6713-259-zeiss-18-55x38-conquest-rifle-scope.aspx
Any other suggestions are welcomed, but 400 bucks is my max.

Burris 1.5-6x40 Signature Select Rifle Scope
  • Matte
  • Taper Plex
  • 1"
  • Hunter Knobs
SWFA: $359.95
I would take a look at that scope as well.  Gives you a little higher magnification if you need if for longer shots.

This is also an option, I guess, but I still like the idea of a zeiss.

That's an idea as well.  Which of the 3 do think would be the best scope for the money? (Glass wise).  I like the idea of the fixed 4 inches of eye relief on the zeiss and the long eye relief of the leupold.  I see that the burris has 3.5 in of eye relief at 6 power.  I guess that's enough.  I do know that when I first got the rifle the scope on it had 3.3 in of eye relief at high powder, and the recoil would cause the scope to hit my glasses.  What are "hunter knobs"?

Hunter knobs are just the regular low profile knobs.  I can't comment on the leupolds because I have never looked though on of them.  The Zeiss probably has a little better glass that the Sig Sel, although I have always been impressed with the Sig Sel glass.  Having the extra eye relief of the Zeiss would be nice too for shooting heavier rounds in the 338.  Honestly for the price of the Zeiss (only $40 more than the Burris) I think I might go with that for the extra eye releif, then with the Burris next.

i want to know how come you want the lower magnification, i mean i understand if it has a specific application that calls for that, but you will be better off under most circumstances with a 3x9.

I figure that with that caliber I will be shooting something large.  I also don't do any long range practice, so if I'm further than 200 yards out I need to get closer.  Big%20Smile

.........All mentioned are great choices for your rifle. You have alot of options......................With your existing VX1, you have a straight tubed as well as a lighter scope. If you honestly feel that your hunting shots will be at 200 yards or less on big game, which is what I gather from one of your other comments, the 1.5-5x20 VX3 would be an excellent pic. If the only reason why you`re changing scopes, is to get a clearer site pic, but the VX1`s magnification is fine, then if it ain`t broke don`t fix it??............

Even out to 300 and 400 yards, a scope set on 5x is enough for big game. And going to a 6x on the high end with a larger obj. bell, will really not make too much of a difference, but will add some weight and a higher profile.

If you like the lower profile, lighter weight and smaller OAL that the VX1 gives you now, then upgrade the glass and some other tid bits, but not too much of anything else.

I do happen to have a 1.5-5x20 VX3 w/ a German #4 (9.5 oz.) sitting in my office drawer, just waiting to be mounted on my new arrival coming I HOPE, in the fall.

Although I`m not a diehard Leupy fanatic (that gold ring will always remain on the objective bell and off my finger), they do make a great variety which include the straight tube scopes.

The lower powered variable Zeiss to me, is a heavier and longer scope for only being a 1.8-5.5x38 and if memory serves me correctly, about 13 to 18 oz??

It all depends on what you want!

I have a 338 Win Mag also and mounted a 4200 Elite 2.5-10 4200 ...40mm gathers light well, 2.5 on the low end works just fine up close, and 10x on the top end allows for plenty of magnification for a longer shot. It's right in line with your budget, is recognized for being  a great value in optical clarity, and having a half a dozen 4200's ( 300 wby, 300 Ultramag, 338, two  45/70's , &7mm/08 )  --I can attest to their being reliable.

I like all of the suggestions so far.
I had a 1.5-6 Signature and gave it to a friend for his .338. He loves it on that gun.
I also have the 1.5-5 Leo and that is a very good scope, also. You would definitely gain some clarity and low light performance. I don't know if the cost over your 1-4 is worth it, though.
The 4200's are an outstanding choice. I like the 3-9x40 and the 2.5-10 for the .338. I like my 4200. It is my favorite of the few mentioned.

A 1.25-4x24 Trijicon may not work with a 338 Win. unless you use (ugly IMO),,offsets!........Mounting tube length leaves alot to be desired because of that obj. bell......

I forgot about the problem with off sets. Don't like them myself and that excludes the 2.5-8  Leupld, too.

I had a Leupold 2.5-8 Vari-X III on my Remington .338 with Leupold QR mounts.  It worked fine, and I didn't need extension rings.

I replaced it with a Burris Fullfield II 3-9 which was much brighter and didn't give up much (if anything) in terms of actual field of view.

The new Leupold 2.5-8  VX III is a better scope than the older Vari-X in terms of brightness.  I don't know if they've changed the tube length or not.

The Burris 1.5-6 Signature Select is a wonderful scope, in every way.  However, it is a little heavy for my taste (just personal preference).  If it weren't for that, I would have it on all my big game hunting rifles.

Good point, some mounts will work without offsets. I was trying to use Talley QD's with an M700 long action.

I think the 4200, 2.5-10 offers alot of flexability, as does the .338.

I'm liking the 2.5-10 idea since the .338 clearly has the ability to use the added power. How about this Trijicon.

I went ahead with the zeiss conquest 1.8-5.5X38.  Haven't had a chance to shoot the gun yet, but the scope looks great.  Definately a big step up from the VXI.  I'm gonna try to post a picture of it.   Thanks for the info everyone.
