Is there a discernible difference between the amount of light gathered by a VX-III 32mm objective vs. a VXIII 40mm objective? I want to use the scope for shooting pigs after sunset in really low light. I thought the Leupold VX-III 1.75-6x32mm scope with the Heavy Duplex might work really well.

To go with a 40mm lens from Leupold in the VX III series, your low end is gonna start at 3.5X..will that work for you ?? You will notice a somewhat brighter with the 40mm lens given all other things being equal.. maybe a 2.5-8 with the 36mm lens would be good compromise if Leupold is a "gotta have" for you

I am not a big fan of Leupold, but have owned the 2.5-8x36 and it was great in low light. One of the best scopes I have ever had for "eastern whitetail hunting". I presume that you will be hunting in pretty heavy cover? For that, the "Leupy" is ideal and though you didn't say what kind of rifle, it should give you all the "reach' you may need.
I HATE to say this... but, I would buy another of those.

What's the price difference between the 32 and the 40 ? May be well worth the few extra dollars .

Thanks for all the help, guys! No price difference, but the 1.75-6x32 can be had with the heavy duplex. I have watched pigs using only partial moonlight before and been unable to see my reticle. I have had a bad, bad experience with Bushnell CS, and will never buy one of their products again. Leupold may not be the brightest scope in that $400 price range, but I figure that their CS plus the heavy duplex might make me happy. Hopefully, the scope will gather enough light to do what I need.

You can also check with the Leupold Custom Shop and order the 2.5-8 with the Heavy Duplex already installed for the same money charged by most internet sites. Leupold has a standardized pricing policy through it's dealers so with that option you get the scope and reticle you want from the start.

here's a great scope for you for what you are doing
a burris euro diamong 1.5-6 with a german #4 with lit reticle around 550 average price I have compared it while watching deer in the field directly behind my house at night, comparing it directly against a Kahles CL 3-10x50 the lit reticle dot is very small and does not overpower the image and the german #4 reticle is well done. it's a GREAT hog hunting scope.. |

I'm thinking a 1.5-6x42 Nikon Monarch gold would be a nice choice and I would certainly look at the Trijicon Accupoint scopes.
also available in red and other models but this would be high on my list for anything in low light.

I do, too. If you aren't going to be shooting real far, that 1.75-6X32 scope should be fine. I like that particular scope myself, although I don't have one. At 4.5 power you would still have a 7mm exit pupil...so that would be just as good as a bigger objective at a higher power. Let's say a 40mm objective would still give you a 7mm exit pupil at 5.7 power. THAT'S The difference. Is 4.5X enough for your pig shooting? Heavy Duplex is what I would get, too, if I got one. I don't think you can get a Heavy Duplex in all of the Leupolds...but I may be wrong.....

4.5 is plenty. I am talking about shooting pigs inside of 50 yards that spook when exposed to a varmint light.

Here is the original version of the 1.75-6x32 Leupold Vari-XIII on my Knight ML. It has the HD reticle and is perfect for the application, that is smoking whitetails.

Appreciate all the help. Just ordered a VX-III 2.5-8x36mm with the Heavy Duplex to mount on a Rem 700 LTR in 6.8SPC. Should be a really nice combination for Texas whitetails and pigs.
