I have a real nice stainless Remington Model 7 rifle in 300 saum and looking for the perfect scope for it. The scope has to be light and compact, like the rifle and balance the rifle out. Price is not really a issue, but I am not one to waste money if I can help it. I intend to use the rifle for elk hunting in think brush/rainforests we have here in Washington state. Here are some models I had in mind:
Bushnell's 1.24-4x24 Elite 4200 Rifle Scope
Leupold 2-7x33 European 30mm
Leupold 1.5x20 Vx-iii 30mm
Leupold 1.75-6x32 Vx-iii

I have a few depending on what your willing to fork out:
1. The Leupold 1.75-6 (that you mentioned
2. Leupold VX3 2.5-8x36 (probably my favorite Leupold)
3. Kahles CL 2-7
4. Swarovski 3-9x36 AV (1" tube)
Roy
If you opt for one of the Leupold's I would suggest getting the heavy duplex reticle which helps their performance in low light. Edited by Roy Finn - June/12/2008 at 13:40 |

I suggest the Leupold VXIII 2.5-8 ... 300 RSUM has some reach to it and 8X on top would help

I have a 3-9x40 Nikon Monarch on mine and you can be the judge if it is to big. The Bushnell 4200 3-9x40 is similar sized and also an excellent choice. I also like the 2.5-8 Leo suggestion.

I do like the idea of the Leupy VXIII 2.5-8. It is quite light at 11.6 oz, and is shorter than the the 3-9's mentioned.

Doesn't Zeiss have a 2.5-8 in the Conquest line? You should be able to see through that one.

I like the Leupold 2.5 X 8 model. You can always get the little doo-dad on the front for "Rainguard" protection....for extra money, of course.

I own the 2.5x8 vx-III Leupold mentioned on a Rem 700 BDL 375 RUM and it is a terrific scope. With your caliber I would suggest a upper mag in that range as you may need to take a longer shot at some point in time. The scope pyro6999 mentioned would be fine, a little lighter a tad longer, you choice, but would be excellent. An alternative would be a Zeiss Conquest. I have never owned one, but all the guys on the OT have only good things to say about them. Here is one.

Martin, you should be able to find one on www.gunbroker.com or www.gunsamerica.com when you are ready. I am sure you already know that, so if I am posting the redundant, then forget about it.

Another vote for the VX III 2.5-8X36. Great scope for smaller rifles. I'd go with a Custom Shop model and let them put in a German#4 reticle. It only costs $35 more.

If cost isn't an issue I would go with something with better glass than a Leupold. Maybe a Kahles, Zeiss, Meopta, Swaro, Trijicon. You certainly won't be wasting money of any of those, and you will have a much better scope and be able to hunt later and earlier.

Yep, that is from my best bear to date.
It looks like the present XCR is only in camo. Edited by tahqua - June/13/2008 at 10:25 |

If your budget can tolerate it, going to a Kahles Helia CL 2x7 or 3x9 would be a better choice or the Trijicon 3x9, but the Leupold that I have has excellent glass, maybe not as good as the two I mentioned, but will get the job done. It just depends on how much money you want to put into the scope and whether it is worth it to you. You mentioned you wanted to keep it light and compact, which the Leupolds definately are, as well as the Kahles Helia CL 2x7, the 3x9 and the Trijicon are getting out of the compact range.

How about a Swaro AV 3-9 X 36. That's what I put on my little Kimber 84M...great combo for sure.

I compared a Kahles 2-7 and the Leupold 2.5-8X36 for about three months, under all conditions. The Kahles is a prettier picture, but it had no advantage early and late. The Kahles wasn't nearly as precise in adjustment and didn't hold zero like the VX III. The Kahles was an AH, but I had the same result with my CL 3-9X42, which is why I no longer have it.
