picked up a Weatherby Mark V ultralight 25-06-stainless 24 inch barrel, synthetic stock-and the only "extra scope"sitting on the safe is a VXIII 2.5-8x36. So, should I just go with what I have or look for something else? I had envisioned a 4.5-14 with a side adjust of some flavor-
disclaimer: I have been on 24hr for a couple of years and I do like leupold, but am posting here to get other points of view!! If I am gonna try anything other than a leupold I'd like some opinions from those that have "been there done that" before I plunk down my dollars...
I have $500 TOPS to spend...and would be happier spend closer to $300..

i dont know if that leupold is long enough in the tube to fit on the 25-06
for $249 you can buy a bushnell elite 4200 3x9 from www.swfa.com you could also buy a 4x16 4200 elite also at www.swfa.com for $430 do you really need a 4x14 or 4x16???

The leupold 2.5-8 should work fine under most circumstances, I also have a 25-06 mounted with a 4.5-14 weaver grandslam. I think this power range is about perfect for the 25-06, look at nikon monarch, bushnell 4200 and leupold vx3, they all offer scopes in this $300-$500 range and any of them should provide excellent service.

A 25-06 is a very versital caliber since the light bullets are great varmit rounds and the heavier bullet is a great deer round and will eaven work for elk. What we dont know is what you really intend to do with the rifle - target or hunting and how you hunt. The VXIII 2.5-8 is a relatively good hunting scope for a guy who stalks game but is a little low on power for someone who hunts from a fixed position with a solid rest. When you say 500 tops that really limits your options as far as scopes with really good glass. I would most likely put a Bushnell 4200 4-16x40 on that rifle and have kenton ind custom knobs made to give me a better ability to shoot it at long range. http://www.kentonindustries.com/
The other option that I might consider since you would be happier spending $300 is a Super Sniper in a 16x. I think you could have a lot of fun with the SS in a 16x or 20x but you would have to understand up front that they will be rather grey in low light. You might want to use quick detach rings on that and the VXIII you have and switch back and forth depending on what you intend to do with the rifle. Prairie dogs the 16x, deer stalking the 2.5-8x36.

I have that exact Leupold and it is a great scope and should be sufficient for that caliber. 1x shy of 9x is of no significance. If you use Warne bases, you will probably have to go with a 905, witch is the longest rear extension base they offer and should accomadate that scope. I have that scope on a Remington 700 BDL 375 RUM which uses the same front and extension rear mounts that the Mark V does and it fit just fine, especially with that that long eye relief. Other wise, here is an excellent choice in your price and magnification range with a side focus if you just want to have something different with good quality optics, that approaches those of the VX-III.

I will use it for both target shooting and hunting-I hunt mostly "sneek and peek"...slip along the edge of a wheat field and peek out every couple hundred yards to see what is there-some shots are less than 50 yards, some could push 300++, but I have never pulled the trigger one one past 200-I much rather get CLOSE! but for target shooting I think the larger magnification would be more fun!
I have a couple of the bushnell 4200's and love them, but the 3-9 is so close to the 2.5-8 I'd probably just keep what I have...but the higher poer bushnell is a candidate!

Oh, I am also not opposed to hunting from a stand and most of my other rifles are short barreled "stalking guns" so this one would probably be tops for stand hunting over large fields...when the occasion calls for such hunting.

Sounds like you want to spend more than the Buckmaster cost. Go for the Bushnell, you will not go wrong as you already have experience with them.

the monarch is a nice scope, but the bushnell is a bit better plus nikons cs dept has a nasty reputation, and the elite has rainguard also.

how much do you hunt in the rain or snow?? and how much do you value customer service in the event that something goes bad inside the scope??

I would just keep the Leupold and cover it up with a paper bag or something when you are out in public.
Just teasing.
Why spend money if you don't have to--- unless you just have "scope fever"......and if you do you'll have to start at the Leupold VX-III level and go up.........which means 4200 Bushnell minimum.....why not upgrade to IOR??
