Looking to get a new browning a bolt chambered for 270 wsm.  Any suggestions for a good all around scope in the five to six hundred dollar range.  I have never owned a scoped rifle before and always shot with iron sights so I really dont know what to look for in a rifle scope I just want to be able to reach out and hit something at a good 500 yards

Based on information provided, bcard, a Zeiss Conquest 3.5-10X44, with #4 reticle, should serve you well, for an extra $50, and it would be money worth spending.

You might want to look at a Kahles American/American Hunter, 3.5-10X50 on the Sample list, as well.  You have one flat shooting cartridge with that .270 WSM, and the Browning is excellent rifle, esp in SS A-Bolt II.  One of my hunting partners has one, and he is very happy with it.

Take a peek at the Remington 150 grain Accu-Tip Boattail.  Great ballistics

Welcome to the OT bcard!

You might also look at a Zeiss 3-9X40 with a Rapid Z 600 reticle, for range finding capabilities for longer distance shooting, for about $525.

Good Luck.

Good suggestions on the scopes , I have a Browning A-Bolt in the 243 wssm, I like it but I wish I have waited for the X-bolt, the changes in trigger and magazine are worth it.  This is particularly true if you are going to do some long distance varmint or target shooting.  You may want to look at some of the Bushnell 4200 line of scopes they are not quit up to the Zeiss or Kahles but they are good. Does the $600 budget include a good set of rings and scope mount?

Duce, you got that right about the X Bolt, which may be close to coming out on the market.  I forgot about that one, as I am a lefty, and they do not make the X Bolt for lefties this year.

I also noticed a couple of Kahles Helia CL 3-9 X 42 with Multizero for a good buy at $600 on the Sample list.

Hey -- a fellow Marylander ..Welcome to the OT .. You want a good combo for 500 yd shots, and no scoped rifle experience before? ... Well, honestly to make a 500 yd shot fair to the game you're shooting at , and to be consistent, is gonna take some serious range time . I think the A-bolt and 270 WSM are great choices, and  for optics I'd go with a Bushnell  Elite 4200 2.5-10 , Leupold dual dovetail  mounts and med rings ,and pocket $200 of your budget. You'd have to spend 3 times as much to see any real gain in optics, and still be lacking the 4200's Rainguard. Hit the range a bunch and work your way up to say 300 yd.s then stairstep to your goal of 500yd.s Big%20Smile

NOOOOO .... it's not marketing hype .... depends on which one you're talking about . I have one I have been putting through the paces for over a month in the real world ... not benchrest shooting .... it's superb to say the least ! I bought the Nikon Monarch AO M IL MD ... dual illuminated rectile ... mil-dot .... 44 mm ... smokes the others in it's price range .
Got it here for over 40% off .... Nikons are terrific scopes .

+1 on the Zeiss. For the money they are a nice scope. Another option would be a Nikon Team Primos from SWFA if they have any left. I have one of each, and the Nikon is nice too. The BDC reticle is of the same concept as the Rapid-Z 600 but in my opinion not as nice. I think the circles are too big, or something. I kind of think its just ok. Glass in the Nikon is good too, but again not as nice as the Zeiss. The windage and elevation tracking in my Nikon was not what I would call real good. The Zeiss has been spot on so far. They are both nice, and one would have to think hard about spending $300 more for a Zeiss, but for me, if I had to do it all over again, I think I would buy the Conquest. Only you can decide where to draw the line, but there are many other good choices out there too. Maybe a 3-9x42 Kahles CL Multizero off the samplelist for $599. They seem to be very nice, and I intend to add one to my collection too.

I have the one peice Leupold quick release mount and rings on my A bolt with a Leupold VX-L 2.5-10 X56 scope  I like it on that rifle but most all my other rifles have picatenney rails on them so I can switch scope easly at the range.  I think Warne and TPS build mounts and rings for that rifle now.

FYI, apparently the 3-9 X 40 Conquests with the Rapid Z 600 are on backorder. I had a friend just order one last Tuesday and that is what he was told by SWFA in an e-mail. Don't know when they will be available.

At least we are not yet on top of a hunting season for the wait on a backorder.  I might like the Kahles even better.
