New to forum. I am a black powder shooter using a 45cal slug gun from 100 to 500 yards. I have not ever used a scope before as the round ball bench gun matches all use iron sights.
The matches are held in Friendship Indiana which is known for mirage coming off of the damp grass.
I am looking for suggestions, as most shooters use unertil 15-24x old style scopes, which are commanding big bucks. I understand with the older scopes as the power increases the  effects of the mirage increases. What about todays modern glass? Is there a coating that will decrease the mirage? SUGGESTIONS

Thanking you in advance,
Mark

I don't see how a good modern scope could be any worse than an old Unertl, as good as they are, and in many ways are probably a good deal better

I think unertls are probably used in black powder matches more for an element of nostalgia than anything else.

I don't think a scope can really make mirage worse; a good one merely allows you to see more clearly that it is occuring in the first place.
It's kind of like a new shooter complaining that a rifle equipped with a high-magnificatiopn scope is "too hard to hold steady", when all it is doing is allowing him to see how much he is wobbling his rifle around.
He can't see that wobble with a low-power scope, and happily believes he is holding steadier than he is!

please explain. Is newer better? If I use  a high power rifle scope the target will look wavy which old eyes will have a problem with,Or should I just buy a high power spotting scope, read the mirage and adjust my low power rifle scope like the shooter does with his spotters info.

Totally agree with every statement RONK said . Plus those old Unertl scopes were good in their day ... but those days are gone . They just look like the antique scopes on civil war rifles and look cool on black powder rifles ... but that's about it .

The better question is how much adjustment are you really going to use?  That's why the unertl style scope are popular is the amount of elevation adjustment.  You should have a good spotting scope anyway.

elevation adjustment on iron sights is accomplished by a two stage front sight block, and I suppose if I ran out of elevation minutes the same solution could be used by using a lower front  scope block. The same question remains is newer better, and is lower power better to shoot through a mirage?

I think newer is probably better; assuming you buy QUALITY new optics. There have been many improvements in optical glass, coatings, etc., over the years.  I don't believe that any older scope can offer the degree of light transmission and resolution that a GOOD new model offers.

As far as the mirage question, most people like less magnification in heavy mirage, because they then see less of its' effects but that doesn't mean that they can shoot as well as they might with more magnification, all else being equal.
All in all, too many variables to give a definite answer.

VeeVay is the county seat for Switzerland County.  Friendship is between Versailes (county seat of Ripley co.) and VeeVay. Off of US 50 and Indiana 129 on Indiana 62. That's about an hour outside of Cincy OH and a hour and a half out of Louisville KY airports on the Indiana side.

VeeVay is a cooler place to hang out that Versailes. Ya can seat out and watch the barges go up and down the Ohio.  It is not the tourist trap that Madison or Lawrenceburg are (way cleaner than Lawrenceburg too).

Even by my standards, Friendship is out in the middle of no-place.  Though conveantly located near the Burbon Trail and about half an hour from two casinos. Hey Freindship has got to be underwater right now.

as ronk mentioned the mirage is always there, with higher magnifications you just see different slices of it. sometimes if the mag. getting to read mirage is one of the skills of wind doping. mirages image contains pockets, much llike balloons of air and different temperatures which refract the light differently and it is possible to read the wind speed as they cross the target image. usually with faster warming (than the air) ground effects can be seen at around 10 x and become trouble, for some, around 15x. from reading this and other forums it would also appear eastern shooters use lower range variables that westerners, so air density is probably making the effects show up with elevation changes.
