In this months Outdoor Life they test several scopes. The editors choice is a Nikon Monarch ED 8-32x50. This scope gets an excllent score, but thier is not much decription about the "ED" glass. SO, does anyone know if the (Extralow-Dispersion Glass) is something usefull or just marketing?

Nikon had used ED for about thirty years in cameras.  They came up with the patten.  That is thier highest level of lenses.  It gives a very high level of color clarity and resolution without the need to be radioactive.  Yes, I said raidoactive. Nuke  (You Cannon folks wondered what that L used to stand for?) That was the old way of fixing the problem.

If you want something like an 8x32 then it is a must.  IT really needs some extra objective size like a 67mm to get the extra resolution mojo working.  It will still be brighter and clearer than the normal 50mm.

When you see APO then that is a similar thang.  ED glass is not as hard or robust, than normal lenses.  It is a lot clearer and takes less corrective steps than the normal lenses.

My wife has been a camera lens aficianado for some time.  She sent me to one of her "favorites" pages for this:

ED glass is an improvement over the fluorite used by other makers at the time because it is hard enough to use for outside elements, unlike the soft fluorite.

ED glass helps eliminate secondary chromatic aberration (green-magenta color fringes) which is what previously prevented the design of practical super speed, super sharp super teles.

Discount brands now purport to use this glass. Ignore all these claims; they may or may not use this glass, but there are far more important factors in lens design than just what sort of glass was used. See the reviews for specific performance tests.

ED glass is less stable with temperature than conventional glass, and so the focal lengths of these lenses change slightly with temperature. Therefore there is no hard infinity focus stop on ED lenses because the point of infinity focus will change a bit with extremes of temperature.

ED glass also has a lower index of refraction so it requires more deeply curved elements for the same focal length.

ED glass gives pretty much the natural bright colors of what ever you are looking at.  As in spotting scopes why pay the extra$$$ if it is not necessary. Most birdwatchers by their spotting scopes with ED glass because it really comes in handy for digiscoping...taking pictures.  If the color is real important to you go ED. But,  for hunting or punching holes scopes with without ED glass can save you $$$ and can still deliver bright, crisp and light gathering abilities.
Always run from a fight...but if they catch you deliver them to hell personally.
