I am sure we have all had that once-in-a-lifetime shot. The one that you cannot believe yourself. Well, this thread is to let it hang out there! Brag a little, or just tell it like it happened. This thread is just for fun, no winners, no losers, no prizes.
I'll fire the first shot!
My first (yes, I have had several once-in-a-lifetime shots because I have lived for so long) was on a typical Eastern Cape bushbuck hunt.
We hunt off beaters and hounds, so most shots are taken at running game. 99% of us shot with open or iron sights. So on this particular day I was moving from my position to get ahead of the beaters and the dogs, when a bushbuck ram broke cover on the other side of the ravine. Probably about 200yds away and going like the clappers up the hill to move into the next ravine. The bush in the ravines are extremely dense, and it thins out to the top. I just could not get a shot in. I had my bead on him, but it was more bush then ram. Right at the top of the ravine the bush opened up briefly. There was a big tree right on the skyline and he made a bee-line for it. By now he was about 350yds away. As he was about to swing in behind the tree I squeezed the trigger. It was impossible to tell if I hit him, as the tree trunk obscured any possible sight of the downed ram. The dogs went howling up on the scent. I personally thought it was an impossible shot given the distance and the brief glimpse of the ram. Then the dogs milled around the tree, tails wagging! When I got there, a beautifull ram lay stretched out. My bullet had caught him behind the ear and exited through the oppsite eye. A perfect head shot at a ram going full tilt at some impossible distance, with iron sights!!! The Castle beer flowed around the campfire that evening, and the ram ran faster and the distance greater with each telling!!! Edited by 8shots - May/29/2008 at 04:33 |

My most memorable shot; When was a kid, a friend and me were hunting squirels one day, he with a pellet gun, me with a $10.00 K-mart fiberglass bow. My friend missed with the gun and as the squirel was running to get away, I stuck with the bow, damn I was proud.

I was watching some Turkey one day during the rut, and I noticed something moving down the knoll just a ways (300 Yds) I lifted my binocs to see the head of a doe, I lifted the old Savage up and took aim at the rather small target, and shot her right behind the eye, just in front of her ear, she dropped like a rock, although I thought that I may have missed. I was rather proud of that shot and my buddies still talk about that one.
The best I've ever seen was a Texas heart shot on a buck, that my buddy pulled off, a running shot on that buck was 150 yrds, with a Remmy 7400 30-06 right up the WAZOO!!!!! Now THAT IS SKILL!!!!

My best shot (luckiest probably) was with a muzzleloader. It was an old Thompson center
hawkin rifle with an octagon barrel and round balls with the patches
you stuck on your mouth to lube them up. It was a really snowy day and
we say some deer that were 300 yards off(we stepped it off after the
shot). My dad had his bino's up and said the second one back is a 3
point. So I pulled the gun out of the gun boot from the four wheeler
and aimed at the deer. The front sight covered up the whole deer, so I
tried to center it the best I could and then aimed a little high and
pressed off the trigger. My dad all the sudden started laughing and
said that I had hit it and it just dropped. When the smoke cleared (we
were using actual black powder) I looked at the deer running and sure
enough they were down 1 in numbers. So we walked over to where they
were and there he laid with a bullet hole right under his ear.

I took my best mulie ever at 325 yards. He was walking on an opposite ridge and he went down within 40 yards of the hit. I had a 4x Burris on my Remington 7mm mag.

My best shot (with a lot of luck) was on a mulie. He came running out of the trees at 400 to 450 yards broadside. Biggest one I had seen that year. Pulled up on him and took the shot. Hit the liver, and he dropped in under 50 yards. Shooting my Voere Arms Mauser 98 270.

Some time after my first best shot, I was on a kudu hunt, when a young bull came tearing out of nowhere. he was running on a flat piece of ground, some two hundred yards away, going broadside past me and the farmer. A kudu is a big animal, and the speed he travels at is deceptive. So I led him one kudu length in front, and squeezed the trigger. He sat down on his haunches, made a 180 deg turn and went straight back from where he came, still going flat out. I led him two lenghts, and he went down in a cloud of dust. Got there: shot in the head. The first shot had literally cut an inch groove on his haunches below the tail!!
The farmer was not very gracefull and he kept up the whole day telling the rest of the hunting party what a lucky shot I had. Eventually I lost it and challenged him to invite me to a return hunt. Everything I shot in the head I keep for no charge, everything else I pay for. Off course he shut up, and never a peep out of him for the rest of the day! Edited by 8shots - June/03/2008 at 03:44 |

I've had a best shot, and a luckiest shot. The luckiest was on a whitetail doe that ran right in front of us. We were getting out of the truck to go hunt and here she came. The guy in the front seat of the truck got out right in my way, so I started stepping off to the side to get around him. Too late, I pulled the rifle up when he shot, and saw her take a hit in the hind quarter. It hit her at a steep angle and was not going towards anything vital. She ran down a ravine out of sight, and crossed into the next section. I saw her running through a creek, but lost sight of her. She broke out of the creek to run behind a big hill, giving me just enough time to get a shot off. This is not a shot I would normally take, but she was wounded, and I wanted her down. I had turned the mag. on my scope down when she started running, so I put her in the edge of the scope, raised up over her and squeezed, or yanked or something. As I came down from the recoil, I saw her drop her head and pile in to a fence. I knew she was done, so I reached into the truck and grabbed the range finder. She tangled in the fence about right where I hit her at 482 yards. When I went to get her, she had a hole right below the left ear, and coming out under the right eye.
The best shot was at an 18" round steel target at 600 yds. It was windy, and I had never shot that far, but I had a new Rapid-Z scope and wanted to try it out. I extended the bipod legs and sat on my butt to see over the corn. I tried to hold the 600 yd pin as steady as I could, pulled into the wind as much as I thought I needed and squeezed. About the time I was going to start cussing, the sound of steel got back to me. This may be normal for a long range competitive shooter, but under the poorly supported windy conditions, it was good for me. Shot landed 4" off dead center to the left, with wind about 15-20 gusting from the right. Sorry this is really long, Got cramps in my hands now.

The only one I would try on a live animal was chipmunk eradication around the home.
Saw the little bugger run under a pile of firewood stacked on the patio.
No windows nearby and I waited, motionless on the steps with my trusty Crosman 760 loaded with copper bb's.
Sure enough, he poked his head out to see if it was clear.
I had no clear shot, but had a glancing shot if I skipped it off the patio concrete.
Took some billiard windage and pulled the trigger.
He didn't move so I waited a minute....walked down and he was dead with a bb hole under his chin....perfect skip off the concrete for a CLEAN kill.
Best shot(s)
Running 300WSM handloads thru the chrony at the 100yd range, I decided to run some of my 45acp loads thru my Kimber 5" just for the velocities, as I was using them in IPSC.
I had the chrono out about 10 feet from the bench and figured I better aim at the target so the chrono didn't get hit.
I shot 3 and recorded the velocities while the barrel cooled on my Tikka.
I went back to shooting the rifle and went to change targets.
I was admiring my groups and noticed two large holes at the 12 o'clock center bull.
First reaction was 'some bigbore shooter shot the wrong target'...then it struck me...those were 45 semiwadcutter holes!
I shot 3 round of 45 and two of them hit the bull at 100 yards!
Granted, I was aiming at the center of the target but figured an open sight handgun lobbing big bullets at 100yds, I'd be lucky to hit paper.
Target still hangs in my garage.
I doubt I could do it again if I had a case of ammo.

OK, I'll go ahead with this one. It may not be my best, but It comes to mind the most.
Place Camp Bucca Iraq. Not knowing what our mission would be I brought my trusty range finder hoping to get some time on the M-19 in potential convoy combat. Instead we end up providing security in a detainee/prison camp. Inatially we were armed with non-leathal shotgun crowd rounds. There efective range was about 20ft. so as a tower guard they were useless. In riot suppression all we could do is make noise and watch the rioters laugh at our feeble stupidy. Note; In the endless hours of guard duty I did manage to make range cards for all the compounds with my trusty range finder. Finally about two months in command answers our pleas for better arms. The FN 303. Basically it is a modified paint ball gun that fires a variaty of rounds. paint markers, OC, and my favorite the crowd desperser. It my friend is not to be laughed at. It (the round) is built of a plastic outer body where the front dome is filled with lead pellets about half the size of #9 shot. then a plastic divider seals the rear compartment that holds rubbing alcohol. Yea! Thats what I'm talking about! Open a hole and disinfect in one shot. Plus this thing (less-than leathal) will kill inside 10 meters. As usual everyone had to Qualify before useing. Thats when I found that this weapon was no joke. At 10 meters it would knock a hole in 3/8 plywood, you may say so what! I promise, you don't want none of this. Back to the story. About five weeks pass and nothing but mind numbing on shift off shift and then it happens. Some new residents join our compound and OOPS! they are not welcome. The fighting starts right under my tower and as usual I report it to my ncoic who responds "Hit the ones throwing punches" OH! this is fish in a barrel. The bad thing is the FN 303 only holds 15 rounds per mag. But as instructed 'Walk your rounds into your target" These first are about 15 meters and pop, pop, pop the first one drops when the last pop hits him in the low chest. After I dropped three in sequence the crowd stopped fighting as if to say what happened. They look up at me and notice my new toy and the look of satisfaction in the glow I know I had. A couple carry the fallen into their tents and the crowd moves away to about 40 meters and resume the fight. Again I walk rounds in and drop 4 more before they stop, again. By now the other guards are getting frustrated because they "think" they are out of range. This compound being 120 meters across. The crowd has grown by three and they move to about 70 meters from me and the guard across from me won't fire (I will not say why) So they go at it again and now my view is limited but there are 5 or 6 wearing each other out against the wall of one of the housing buildings. Forget walking them in, I'm putting these guys down! I fire one round at the building for trajectory and then with a new mag send seven rounds down the wall. It was like it was Choreographed , five dropped as if hit with a hammer and two stepped back as if they had killed their opponents. These weapons are very quiet but when those men fell a hush fell over the compound. Ofcourse by now the compound was surrounded by reinforcments and the rioters were ordered to the holding area. I can't help but state the obvious, That was a stupid move. Why are you going to put a group of rioters in a confined area? You guessed it, Now over seven hundred men are in a free for all. And I have to laugh, every guard in that quarter including myself cut loose. You've never seen so many men fall and so many white flags go up at the same time. I gained unique status that day. I was the first soldier to effectivly employ the FN 303 and establish that it had an effective range of 100+ meters. Other than being a 20 hour day it was a good day.
The casuality report. Three killed by other rioters (bludgened to death) and 225 treated for crowd control injury (FN 303 and shotgun) and 74 various injuries (undetermined origin).
The range cards were helpful to me because of my experience with various weapons and became standard for all compounds and to my knowledge the FN 303 has been a major factor in reducing prison riots in open compound theater ever since. Thats great but to me I'll always remember those guy's against that wall who's arrogant disreguard for US soldiers and their authority suddenly change to submission and atleast a form of respect.
When we stood on the tower rail with the 303 at low ready everybody would suddenly get real nice. We still had some riots, but they never lasted long.
One of my best shots on a deer, 484 steps with my bar 270 on a doe. She reared up like a horse and fell over on her back. Perfect heart shot. I love when a plan comes together!

Here is a pic of the FN. Also found out that you can have your very own for just 950.00 + t/s.
The air bottles hold 5000psi and regulate the same velocity all the way down to 1100psi before need of a recharge.

My first great shot was my first deer. Used my fathers Mossberg 308 bolt action with iron sights to make a clean one shot kill at 350 yards (through both shoulders). The look on our friends face was priceless.
My favorite pistol shot was with my 6.5" Smith in 38 special. While on my way out to a friends ranch to go elk hunting I the Smith to take a coyote on a dead run at 75 yards on the 3rd shot.
Range shot would be my 340 Weatherby making a .38" 5 shot group at 100 yds. from the bench.
