Found a polmer tip from a 180 grain Nosler Accubond in my Sako this weekend. This was factory Federal Premium Vital-Shok 30/06 ammunition. I've read about this before in some user feedback on a large on-line ammo dealers website. I'm looking for an accurate alternative in a bonded bullet, only in factory loaded ammo as I don't handload. Thanks.

Timber, this could happen with any polymer tipped bullet from any manufacturer. I wouldn't let this one instance steer me away, but if you feel you must, all of the bullets that have been listed should provide excellent results.

I'm old-school core-lok and such and only recently switched to polymer tipped ammo because of the ballistics; most shot flatter, especially at longer ranges.
I was disappointed to find the tip broken off inside the rifle. My Sako 85 has never jammed and is very smooth cycling so that makes me even more suspicious of the ammo. I would add though I've probably only fired it about 250-300 rounds. |

could have just been a bad bullet too, all that tip does is start the expansion process

That's what I'm thinking - a bad bullet. I've been having somewhat inconsistent accuracy results with the rifle, a Sako 85 in 30/06. I was hoping I could pin the problem on the ammo. I'm trying some different ammo for a comparison. The strange thing is that the Accubonds (or at least some of them) have been accurate in this rifle. But they've been inconsistent the last two times I've been to the range. I'm questing everything; copper build-up in the barrel, scope mounts, scope, bedding and the ammo. Frustrating.
Last weekend I was shooting 1" groups (100 yards) with a Featherweight 6.5x55 with Federal Power-Shok 140 grain soft points; this gun has a skinny barrel and a Zeiss 3-9x40 Conquest. Yet all I could do with the Sako (Leupold VX-111 3.5-10x50) and Accubonds was (EDIT) 2" groups. It's shot 1" groups before. EDIT: 2"groups Edited by timber - May/31/2008 at 16:40 |
