Leupold can change M1 to M3 or the reverse - just add money. My take on it though is that if you have a scope of this type you may be better off trading it to SWFA for the exact scope you want. The fixed 10x is neither a hunting or a target scope it is designed for military and police sniper use. Hunters typically prefer a variable power scope to add flexability of using it at closer distances. Target shooters typically want a higher power optic after all they are using a solid rest and more power is better for benchrest shooting. I have owned the 10x M3 version of the Leupold Mark 4 and I will advise that you may not like what you get if you go that route because the clicks are 1 click is 1moa and moves 1 inch at 100. The M1 knobs that you object to are wonderful useful knobs and are 1/4 moa and each click moves 1/4 inch at 100. see http://www.kentonindustries.com/ for a better understanding of what can be done with what you have. If you still want knobs with covers use the form on samplelist and trade the scope you have for a scope that better meets your needs like a

Thank You . I will look into trading, For me knobs that are NOT protected are useless. I know that the set up I have now is great. Just not for me. So, for what type if shooting is the M3 - 10 power fixed is best for?

You can change the M1 to an M3, but the M3's do not have covers either, they will however be a lower profile adjustment. You can't install the standard target adjustments, (the ones with covers) on a tactical style maintube, unless its a Mark 4 PR eddition.

You could trade it towards an IOR fixed 10x. http://www.swfa.com/pc-10113-292-ior-10x42-tactical-30mm-rifle-scope.aspx
It has target turrets but they do have caps to cover them and the glass will be noticeably better than the Leuplold. |

I agree that the adjustments aren't needed for hunting big game at 300 yards.
I don't believe for a minute Leupold developed the M1 and M3's for "wannabees". They are a scope designed for the intended purpose of sniper/counter-sniper use. They are used by law enforcement and the military extensively. They have an excellent reputation because they are a very good scope, as many members here can attest to. I also own a few Nikon Monarchs and they are a very good scope for the money. I would not get rid of any of my better Leupold's for one, though. Edited by tahqua - June/02/2008 at 15:26 |

That would depend on what grade Monarch I had ... and which Leupold you're talking about .... some leupolds are lousey compared to the higher end Monarchs .

Anything with a II on down and I agree with that. In fact they say the VX-II is the equivalent of the VariX-III. Not from what I have seen.
