I've seen this comming since digital photo equipment put me out of the Photography business and took my $3500 a piece lenses and made them worth very little. I saw a Chinese military photo a while back with a digital sight mounted to the assault rifle and a helment mounted display -  ie: hold the gun around the corner or over the log and shoot by aiming with the helment mounted display.  Advantages like your video camera night mode let you see in the dark better than you could possibly see with the best glass and a 7mm exit eye pupil and do it a five times the power.  This is the tip of the ice berg guys=====>

Elcan Day and Night DigitalHunter Digital Rifle Scope 2.5-16.5x Electronic Zoom with Integral Picatinny-Style Mount Matte

  • Fully digital sighting system with LCD display
  • Shot-activated video/photograph capture
  • Integral Picatinny-style mount
  • USB port for data transfer
  • Includes 4 AA batteries
  • 1-year factory warranty

Features:

  • Instant replay - video or still photos may be reviewed on the LCD display immediately after they are captured.
  • Shot activated video/photo capture - a 5 second video sequence is captured and stored on a secure digital memory card activated by the shot. May be set to contain video that is all before the shot, before and after or all after. May also be set up to capture high, medium or low resolution still imagery in the same manner.
  • Exit pupil diameter is a constant size over all magnifications.
  • Video output port - enables others to see what the shooter sees in real time when the video is viewed on an external monitor.
  • USB port for downloading customized reticles and ballistics to the scope. May also upload captured images and video from the scope to a computer.
  • Secure digital card - port provides a means of storing images and video from the scope. Port is compatible with the "Secure Digital Memory Card" format. Also, all reticles and ballistics may be transferred via the Secure Digital Card, providing an alternative to the USB interface.
  • Power port provides an alternative power source to the scope's four AA batteries. Power port accepts a 12 V AC/DC power adapter or a number of aftermarket 12 V power packs. Scope automatically switches to internal battery power when an external power source is removed.
  • Ballistically corrected reticle - scope automatically positions the scene so the shooter can hold 'dead-on' at the estimated range to the target. The shooter inputs zero range, bullet data, rifle data into the ballistic software, then downloads it to the scope via the USB port. Before the shot, estimated range to target is input using the scope-mounted keypad. The scope then positions the scene (and crosshairs) so the shooter can position the crosshairs at the desired point of impact.
  • Scope can have four different reticles loaded at the same time.
  • Electronic zoom - there are no moving parts in the scope except for diopter adjustment, magnification is accomplished electronically, centered about the designated center pixel. Aim point does not change at all during magnification changes. Resolution does not change significantly from wide field of view to narrow field of view.

    Specifications:
  • Displayed field of view at 100 yards: 36.4 feet at 2.5x, 5.8 feet at 16.5x
  • Operating time: 4 hours at 77 degrees F
  • Power source: Four AA Lithium batteries (not included)
  • Exit pupil diameter: 12mm
  • Eye relief: 60mm
  • Diopter adjustment: plus or minus 6
  • Length: 11.75" without eye guard
  • Objective Diameter: 52mm
  • Ocular Diameter: 45.1mm
  • Weight: 26 oz
  • Operating temperature: -4 to 120 degrees F
  • Rainproof, shockproof
  • Video recording rate: 15 Hz for 20 seconds at QVGA resolution
  • Image compression: JPEG
  • Video compression: DV AVI Type 2 (MJPEG)
  • Memory: Secure Digital Card (128 Mb SD card included)
  • USB cord, 12V power cord are not included
  • Lens covers are not included
  • Lifetime warranty on mechanical and optical parts, 1 year warranty on electronics

    DigitalHunter Scope Mounting:
  • The cross bolt spacing on DigitalHunter is designed to interface with the standard military Picatinny mounting rail for small arms weapons (MIL-STD-1913), using .190" diameter cross bolts. DigitalHunter has 5 cross bolt mounting holes on each end with a blank space in the middle equal to 4 holes. This is the equivalent of 14 equally spaced holes with 13 spaces between them. The mounting holes are .394" apart (equal to the distance from the center of one Picatinny rail slot to the next).

Wow, that sounds really cool.  But it is sure going to suck when the batteries go dead or some other technical problem when you really need it.
Lifetime warranty and excellent customer service don't mean a thing when your gun fails during a zombie attack.

This would make uploading balistics possable for the ammunition used. If it had an installed laser rangefinder then all shots could be point and shoot except for windage. Cure Interface a kestrel 4500 weather station and off you go. As near to perfect, from one position for shot placement. Almost to the point of no shooter required. Place it on a tripod and hook it up to Chris's trail cam and stay in your recliner.  What are we doing?   Peeker

Like it or not it sure seems to be the future.. I saw the military version on the History channel. 'If they have a lock feature I would have been in soooo much trouble as a kid when my dad downloaded the shot activated images!! YIKES!!! LMAO

I want one ..... yea right like I could afford that ....   saw that show also on modern weapons of the NEAR future they said for the military . Plus did anyone see the fiber optic suits/uniforms they are developing ? Will make the soldier like that alien in the predator movie ! It'll project what's behind / other side of them almost completely invisible to an extent .

I am surprised we have not seen more of this type of scope considering how long and how good the digital cameras have been around, the military versions are very good, resiolution improving all the time.

    The idea is very interesting.

The possibility of making a replay to see if the shot hit the target or to use the electronics to compensate for low light.

Only problem so far is the picture quality is so low.
I belive mostly will lost their interest after having looked into one.

But this is only the first civlian atempt, and I belive they will be improved and common.

There is always some concern about making affordable electronics that can withstand repeated recoil of hunting rifles.  Still, I would expect to see quite a few of these devices to hit the market.  In the end I suspect we will end up with a hybrid optical electronic system with combined optical and electronic zoom.  The big thing will be the amount of computing power that can be comfortably contained within such a sight.  If they can use enough computing power, they can use inexpensive optics with digital distortion correction on-chip.

Ultimately, the device that will win out in the end will be a scope that can work in both passive (purely optical) and active (optoelectronic) modes.

Saw a device on ad sent to me, shows a (small)  ? 5"x7" LCD screen mounted above the scope that magnifies the image a camera sees looking through the scope. The camera mounts on the scope base, and "looks) through the scope for you..line up the cross-hairs and hammer down...about $400.00 bucks if memory serves me...scope not included...
anyone get that ad in the mail as well?
