I'm going to pick up a used rifle shortly and need to get some goggles for it. While I would prefer to stick a Zeiss or Meopta on it, it ain't going to happen with the coin presently available in my pocket. With that in mind, what scopes should I be looking at in the $300 or less category? Preferrably on the LESS side. I don't forsee a lot of heavy use with this rifle. Mainly sitting in a box blind over peanut fields watching does munch on crops, etc... I've briefly looked at the Nikon Buckmasters and Leupold VX-II's, both in a 3-9x40 configuration. What else is out there in that price range and which stands on top in terms of clarity and light transmission. Weight and eye relief are of no concern and will not figure in way, shape or form into my decision. Thanks.

Two scopes that come to mind are the Bushnell 4200 and Nikon Team Primos. Both are in 3-9x40 and have very good optics. They are both very good mechanically. The 4200 costs a bit more but has the Rain Guard feature. This coating works great in very wet conditions.
I'm not seeing them listed right now but both appear on the SWFA home page.

The Bushnell 4200 3x9 or the Nikon Team Primos 3x9 at 249 and 199 respectively will serve your needs quite well and are both superior to the scopes you mentioned.

I know I could do the research myself, but doesn't the Primos only come with a BDC reticle? I can't use those things, they confuse the poop out of me. I also have to shoot a single pin on my bow because in the heat of battle the multiple points of focus mess me up.

Right you are on that. The 4200 is your best bet for top quality optics at a very good price, then.
You are on the ball, too, D!

The 3200 is a great scope, but the 4200 is clearly several steps above and you are still 50 bucks under your 300 mark. Edited by Dolphin - May/20/2008 at 10:07 |

Sounds good. I guess I can over look that ugly junk writing on the objective bell for quality at a low price.
So you guys defiantely think the 4200 is the better option than the vx-II or Buckmasters?

cool, thanks a for the welcoming tahqua!
i recently purchased 30mm rings and its been difficult finding a nice scope for around 300 bucks in the 30mm tube config. most seem to be 1".
i purchased the 16x42 super sniper. i dont think i will be going past 600 yards. hopefully it wont be toooooooo much focal length for everything before the 600 yard mark

I've also noticed that all Millett and Mueller scopes have been removed from the site. |

I just went to SWFA and they still have the 3-9x40 4200 for sale for $249.95. Nothing told me they were out of stock. Even told me it would cost me $12.00 to ship.

I'll second everything that was said about the 4200, its just too good of deal to pass up at this price point, actually it should give any scope under $500.00 a run for the money.
