I recently purchased a pair of Steiner Perigrine binoculars and there is a film on the lens that I cannot wipe off. It is almost like vasoline or some type of oil based lubricant, when I wipe with a lens cloth it streaks and looks like it smears on the lens. I did not apply anything. However, I have tried zeiss cleaner with no avail. Does anyone know how to clean my optics without damaging the lens coating. Has anyone else had this problem?

Try either denatured alcohol or acetone. Sometimes the grease used around the ocular housing gets onto the ocular lens itself. I don't believe the Zeiss lens cleaner with remove this type of grease. Double check with Steiner to be certain either will not cause damage to the lens coatings. I have regular contact with the folks at Steiner and if you like I will contact them for you. lucznik is a well know Steiner-anti. He is know to be a Barska/Tasco fan FWIW.

I just checked with my friend, Sven Harms at Steiner USA, who stated that de-natured alcohol will remove this packing grease that is used around the packing seals on the ocular assemblies found in most binoculars. Roy

I think we all are way too aware of my distain for the people running the NRA. Their American Hunter and American Rifleman magazines have become almost unreadable.
They definately aren't the people I would ask for help in picking any kind of equipment.
FWIW, the NRA also crowned the Bushnell Onix 200 GPS with a "Golden Bullseye." This is a GPS unit that has received almost unanimously poor reviews among GPS enthusiasts.

The "Golden Bullseye" was kind of a poor joke. You know I think your a good egg, lucznik. I know you wouldn't be caught dead with a Barska/Tasco product. Now that I am retired from motorcycling, things are sort of boring, but alot
healthier.

I am sure you'll find a new hobby soon enough. Something befitting your adventureous streak, like playing tag with saltwater crocs and shark-baiting. ILya |

Roy, I have a Barska 30x80mm X-Trail, do you think I'd qualify for a Golden Bullseye? 8>) |
