Is 93% good? Decent? average? Can anyone "shed some light" on what the other scopes out there can do in this department? Zeiss? Leupold? Thanks! |

Georiabowhunter, I will tell you the main thing to look for to do with light transmission is make sure your scope is fully multi-coated on each lense in the scope. If your scope has this it will have very good light transmission. These statistics the scope manufacturers put out are measured diffrently by each manufacturer so it really is hard know which light wave they are measuring and what type of light they are measuring. 93% LT is high, and you should be pleased with any scope that will do that.

Swarovski advertises light transmission anywhere from 90% to as high as 94% on some of their 30mm variables. Not as high as the Elite, but still very respectable.

The specification itself is based on how it is measured.
For optics, some quote it based on the worst result in the entire visual spectrum (~400nm-700nm) of the human eye and some only at one specified wavelength. For a single wavelength, somewhere around 550nm is common since that is near the peak sensitivity for a retina's cones. I think today the latter is more popular. (edit to add: because it produces a higher percentage number) Edited by Boomholzer |

Not a reliable statistic because of the reasons mentioned above.
What scope are you referring too? |

Georgiabowhunter,
Not sure if this helps but I live and hunt in south georgia thickets. I had a vx-ii 3-9x50mm that worked great at dark especially on a full moon. On a normal dark evening you could see better through the scope than without it. Which was perfect for the hunting the thick woods. I imagine the vx-III would be better.
Now I have a conquest, hopefully I will get a chance to try it in a day or two. |

S B is 2.5-10x56 30mm Zeiss is 3-12x56 30mm 1. BD is 4-16X50 30mm 1. BD is 3-12x50 30mm 1.4200 is 2.5-10x50 30mm 1.4200 is 2.5-10x40 1" the nikon is sharper and brighter that all at night. that said it the worst eye relief of all of my scopes both the nikon and the 4200 boast 95% light trasmission but the 4200 is not as crisp and clear as the SB zeiss or nikon |
