Hi all. I'm not new to shooting or scopes but am having difficulty with my latest rifle purchase. I have a CZ 550 FS (full stock) in .243. I'm using Warne high rings that fit the 19mm dovetail. I would like a compact scope that would be in keeping with the lines of the rifle. I tried mounting a Leupold 3-9X40 but with the high rings their is only 1/10" clearance between the eyepiece and the bolt. I was thinking of something along the lines of the old Weaver K2.5X20 but can find no charts on the various scopes in that category that list the diameter of the eyepiece. The Leupold eyepiece is 1.6" and would like to find something with a smaller diameter.
Thanks in advance.

I'm thinking it's just the throw of the bolt when you bring it up. If you look at the rings made by CZ they are fairly tall.

The CZ 550 series has a high bolt throw (at least mine does) hence the need for a smaller eyepiece. Rings are scarce for this model with the Euro 19mm dovetail. I could use a weaver adapter base but then the scope would be waaay above the bore. I'd almost rather put a receiver sight on but higher front sights are equally hard to come by. I have two of the 452FS models in .22 and .22mag and don't have the problem mounting scopes.
I'd really like to make this one work, the set trigger is a dream. It has a 3.5 lb pull and only 8 ounces when set.
Thanks for the quick relies.

Just happen to have a review of the CZ 550FS and in it he says most CZ 550 rifles require a high mount even with a 40mm objective lens and 46.5mm objective bell. The problem he says is at the other end where a 36.75mm eyepiece needs the height to clear an open bolt handle. So if I understand this right,a 36.75mm OD ocular bell is the max size that can be used. What y'all think?

That's exactly my problem! The Leupolds have a 1.6" eyepiece and provide hardly any clearance when you throw the bolt. I need to find a scope with a smaller diameter eyepiece. Leupold is the only manufacturer that lists the size of the eyepiece on their website. I thought about a scout scope but can't find appropriate rings for one and don't really care for them anyway. The only other alternative I can think of is to find a competent gunsmith and have a butter knife bolt handle welded on which hope not to have to do.

Just took some scope measurements. The scope used in that review was a Simmons MS Prohunter and although he doesn't give the power range(??)I'm guessing 3-9x40 because he does say it has a 46.5mm objective bell. The 36.75mm measurement must be for that scopes ocular bell. If you have minimum clearance on your Leupold 3-9x40 then your about at the limit. Here are some measurements I got: Simmons MS Prohunter 2-7x32(38.2mm)--Weaver K2.5x20(37.8mm)--Leupold Vari-Xll 3-9x40(39.3mm)--Leupold VXlll 1.75-6x32(39.4mm). I've been collecting a good bit of info on a caliber that is offered in the CZ rifle and have not heard anyone complain about this clearance problem. Maybe I'll check into it further. til later

Burris Signature Safari 1.75-5x32 scope has an eyepiece of 1.53" in diameter as do Burris Fullfield II scopes.
Vortex Viper scopes have an eyepiece of 1.5" diameter. I would probably recommend Vortex Viper in either 2-7x32 or 3-9x40 configuration. ILya |

I think the Leupold and the Weaver are going to be pretty close to the same dimensions, like 300 said....and maybe the old Redfields would be about the same, too. ( I don't know how far back in time you want to go.........!) You probably want a modern scope.
I think you might want to use the CZ mounts and do it their way ( kinda high), or get another bolt handle welded on. If I had a CZ, I would change the bolt handle simply because I don't care for it that much. I know you can get one that doesn't have as much of a curve in the shaft as the factory ones do.
.....just ANOTHER reason why I dislike FAT EYEPIECES!!! ( and these are not even FAT ones!!) --Ed

I agree with Ed on this one. If the rifle is a shooter and you like everything else about it, have a gunsmith bend or replace the bolt handle. Either that or set it up in a scout- rifle configuration with an intermediate-eye relief scope mounted over the rear sight area.

Thanks for all the replies and measurements. So far it looks like the K2.5X20 is an option. Next week I'll hit Sportsman's Warehouse, Gander Mtn., Bass Pro and Dick's armed with a caliper and see what I can come up with. While I prefer Leupold, Nikon, Pentax and Weaver, I wouldn't turn down a high end Simmons or Tasco if I can find one that will work.

+2 on Ed!! Just looked at a picture of a CZ550 w/factory rings and a Bushnell 3200 3x9. CZ must compensate for those HIGH rings with their stock design. At least I hope so! That bolt handle would have to go. Just measured my El Paso Weaver V7-B at 37.4mm and my 2.75x20 Denver Redfield at 40mm. til later |

On my czs I thinned the bold shoulder (square part) considerable or at least enough to clear and used vx2s and used sakos older type mounts. by remachining the tapered "clamp" part to a straight clamp allows a pretty good fit. the bolt clearance was the least thought part of the guns.

I know face structure can differ among shooters, but how is the cheek weld on these CZs using their high ring set up?

I don't know.....probably like my face weld on my old Winchester M70 trying to get ANY SCOPE away from that Lyman #22 semi-buckhorn sight!! ( but I really don't want to remove the sight....the rifle is totally original.)
