I'm the proud new owner of a Browning BLR takedown in .308 and now I need to scope it.  Money is an issue, so I'd like to keep the cost down.  I'm thinking a variable with a medium objective (26-35mm).  I've looked at the new Fullfield II scopes in 2-7x35, as well as the nikon shotgun scopes and the Leupolds.  I'd like to stay away from 40mm objectives, and I think the 1.5 - 6 or the 2-7 power scopes would be perfect for this rifle.  I'm brand new here, though I live in Dallas and have made some purchases from SWFA at the Red Oak store.  I'd love to hear some recommendations.  Thanks.

I'd like to keep it under $350 before taxes, bases and rings, which I guess means $500.  Thanks.

There's ALOT of new scopes coming out just since I was looking at the low range variables this past fall! One that caught my eye is the new Nikon Monarch 2-8x32. It's available with a std plex or a BDC reticle and has an eye relief of 3.8-4". Although SWFA doesn't have the specs listed they have the prices at $289.95 for the std plex and only $10 more for the BDC reticle. I got the eye relief specs on Nikons web if your interested in the other specs.

I've been looking at the Nikon you mention as well as the Conquest 2.5-8x32 and 1.8-5.5x38.  I have a 3-9x40 Monarch UCC on my .270 Win and my dad has a Conquest 3-9x40.  There's a difference, but I don't believe it's $100's difference.  Another one I've been looking at is the Burris Signature Safari in 1.75-5x32.  Anyone able to comment on any of these?

The other option I'm contemplating is a 4x or a 6x fixed.  Specifically the FX-II leupolds.  Thanks for making me feel welcome.  This is my first post.

WELCOME to ya!!  I haven't been here that long myself and am not really a regular but it didn't take me long to find out these guys know their optics and not from books either.
I looked at the Burris Sig Safari and it's as it's name implies. Probably their toughest scope. In fact it was my no.2 choice and ended going with a VXlll 1.75-6x32 because of the hvy plex option. Got it on a .300 S&W.
As far as fixed power scopes go I've got and used quite a few. Last one I bought was a 4.75x40 Weaver Grand Slam. I'm putting together a 20"bbl 9.3x62mm and will likely end up with a fixed power on it. If I were to choose today it would be the 4x Zeiss Conquest and no others below it's price. If money was no object???????? Not knowing the conditions you hunt I can't say if a fixed powere scope would suit you or not. Definitly more variable choices out there though!

Thx 300.  It's tough for me to justify a Conquest 4x when for $20 more I can get the 1.8-5.5x or the 2.5-8x.  I guess weight could be a factor your considering?  Also, I was reading the entertaining thread about the Nikon 6x42s from a few months back and noticed a post suggesting the IOR 4x32.  Some of the posters suggested the optics are on par with the Z6's and Swaro scopes and it's $20 less than the Conquest.  I'm considering it now - it has the added bonus of no markup for a 4A reticle.  I rarely take shots past 200yds, and unless I'm very impressed with the takedown rifle's ability to hold zero (I have my doubts), I won't be pushing this one past 200 EVER.  Thanks again.  I've got some checking to do.  If you want to see the IOR, check it out here:

Thanks also to you Urimaginaryfrnd.  I'm not familiar with Sightron's products.  I have seen some threads in my browsing that were complimentary, but I always assumed they were an "also ran" in the optics world.  Not saying that the are, just my uninformed assumption. Any info you have on them, or if you could point me in the right direction, it would be appreciated.  I had an aimpoint 9000sc on my 6.8SPC, but traded it for a COMPM3, which I love.

I don't understand why one would buy fixed unless it's max magnification for targets over a variable . The variables are just as clear and accurate and you will have the choice of letting them sit at any magnification or being able to zoom in if wanted or needed . Sometimes you need that extra zoom to spot antlers or that neighbor lady tanning in the nude across the way .... just don't have it mounted on the rifle watching her .... or her husband may be mounting you in his trophy room ..... Based on my own research, looking at Chris's scale and his comments re the new Monarch's being new fromt the ground up, I'm really leaning toward that new 2-8x32 Monarch.  If it's truly on par with the Conquest, I don't see a reason to spend the extra dough.  I don't typically use anything over 7x, but with our new antler restrictions in my county in TX the 8x will be nice to have when judging a rack.  Unless someone tells me going this route is foolish, I'll be rat-holing some more cash in the coming weeks to secretly save up for it.  Thanks for the replies, fellas.  I've been lurking a long time, and the information and demeanor here is refreshing.

I too just bought a BLR in .308. I tried a few scopes that I had around and I agree I did not want to go above 40mm, and wanted low magnification. I liked the conquest 1.5-6x38 but talked to few people and they told me that I would have to take off the front sight to not see it at the lowes power setting ( if it true or not I dont know, I did not want to take the chance)and it was heavier than the 3-9x40. I also tried a friends 32mm Monarch UCC that was to short. So I went with a 2.5-8x36mm VXIII. I have never payed to much attention to balance of a rifle nor weight but the BLR loaded comes around under 8 lbs and is just fits when I sholder it. I posted a PIC here a few weeks ago, check it out.

BayouBuck,

When you say the Nikon 32mm is "too short" what do you mean?  Aesthetically, or too short for the bases on the receiver?  Thanks.

I think it was a Nikon 3-9x32mm UCC. I think. It was to short in length. the rear ring sat against the power setting and front ring rested on the incline for the bell. I dont know if this makes a difference but I have always like my scopes to off the part where the bell gets bigger. But even with the ring selector from leupold the I had to use Med. rings 36mm VXIII to not hit the rear sight. Hope this helps. I still have not shot mine yet I think I am going to send in the scope for a #4 before I sight it in.

Thanks.  I just got the notification from Able Ammo that my rifle shipped to my FFL today.  I'll probably pick it up Thursday (Huntsville's just 3 hours down the road).  I'll probably measure the bases and rings and get a good exact measurement and then go to the various maufacturers websites for dimension information re tube, bell, etc.  I'm with you - I like at least a measurable amount of tube between the rings and the bell.  Sounds like the Monarch 2-8x32 may be tight.

Well maybe if you use Leupold Rings. If you use something different let us know because I am interested to see the ring spacing, for say Burris or Tally. I have yet to find a one piece base.

I just had a thought, BayouBuck.  If you're using standard bases, why don't you turn the rear ring base around to reduce the spacing of the rings?  That would reduce the distance between rings by about an inch, and shouldn't interfere with the action.  IF you're using standard Leupold bases, turning the non-dovetail section toward the middle should reduce the length and keep your ring away from the bell.  Experts, correct me if I'm wrong.  Thanks.

This talk has been going on here quite a bit lately.
Us guys who have been using these scopes on our dangerous game rifles have been seeing this for years and it's no big deal. If you don't want your back up irons because you want a lower power variable, that's no big deal either. You need to make a decision on what power range you want and the type of gun it's on. I would not worry about your irons being in the way, though. If you are on 1.5x and there is a little bitty stick that is machined perfectly vertical in the bottom of your view it is no big deal..............guaranteed.

I don' hunt dangerous game but do alot of predator calling and all my calling rifles carry 1x4,1x3,1.5x6,1.24x4,2x7or1.5x scopes and the only time I see the front sight or barrels is at the bench.  When your going for a great FOV your going to see the front of your gun in the periphery of your sight picture.  The blurry (unfoccused) front sight at the edge of your sight picture is lost against close in brush or ground cover in the field.  To lose the front sight in you sight picture by going to a higher magnification,  all your doing is making your FOV smaller.
