I am looking to outfit my old .270 model 70 for my son who is 14.  We will be hunting whitetail and pigs in texas with shots at 100-200 yds.

I don't want to spend more than 200-250 dollars.

I have been a leupold fan but I am willing to try something else.  To quote the crew at optics talk 'more bang for the buck'.

try the vortex diamond back i am test driving the 3x9 right now and for $180 i would consider it a pretty nice scope, another to think about is the nikon primos on sale at swfa now for $199 this is the old nikon monarch scope, down side is that it had the bdc reticle which may not be the easiest thing for a young hunter to deal with, but i may be wrong.

Nikon Team Primos 3-9x40! Yes I just bought two and they are great. Right now, no better deal unless you want a Bushnell 3-9x40 4200. My opinion, Leupold's are not as clear and bright as the Nikon Monarch. Big sale on Primos right now.

maybe even a good 2-7 if you will be doing much close in hog hunting over feeders..
an older Nikon Monarch 2-7 would be a good scope
my son (11)  is shooting my old Sako 243 with shortened stock and a Sightron 2.5-7 shotgun scope I got for him a few years ago because it was set parallax at 75 yards, compact and had the circle plex reticle and was on a lightweight 223 singleshot
he has killed 3 deer with that scope and I wanted to upgrade it, he told me "it's fine dad"

I'm gonna be a little different here. When I started my two out shooting I put fixed power scopes on their rifles. Less for them to be concerned with. And less for them to fiddle with! Looking at the ranges your talking about hunting at I'd go with a fixed 6x.
I saw SWFA has a 6x Burris FFll for under $220. They also have a 6x Leupold FXll for just over $275.
        Just an opinion and suggestion!

im not a fixed fan myself but thats another option, the problem i have with straight 6's is that when that deer sneaks in on you at 20yds thats a little ugly on 6x

I strongly recommend one thing.... if your Son's arms are a little on the short side still, I would look real hard at getting a scope with some extra eye relief.... like 4" if possible.  I know this is higher than your price range, but if you can swing it, go with the Zeiss Conquest 3-9X40.  You/he will never have to buy a different scope!  The extra ER will help your Son with a good, quick cheek weld when mounting the rifle for a shot!  The 4X32 would also work, and its a bit less expensive.

If he's already grown to a good size, then any of those recommended above will work great!
take em!

I know what you mean about  a deer slippen upon top of you, that's why I put a 2 1/2x and 4x on my kids rifles years back. Erich did say 100-200yd shots so I figured 6x would work. To be honest 4x would work, both in covering the close shot possibilities and it would give him more options in scope selections.

............................Well!.......The best bang for the buck will be the 3x9 Elite 4200 @ $249 w/ its Rainguard. The Rainguard is great added assurance, that a shot opportunity will never be lost due to any weather condition. There will be no lens distortions due to fogging, rain, sleet, snow; you name it! The 3x9 is an ideal variable for a .270 and if by chance the shots exceed 200 yards, then so be it; no problem there!..................I use my 3x9 4200 on a 300 WSM and have used it on a 375 Ruger. For your son, this scope is extremely durable, has great optics and will last a lifetime. Compared to the other choices reco`d, the extra $50-$75 is well worth it in your case!...........

If your son is like my 4 sons believe me a variable scope will not be too much for him . Look at it this way ... he can leave her right at min or if he wants or needs it in the future he will have the option . A variable will be extremely more useful and costs just pennies more .

I went with a Sightron SII 3-12X42 on my Daughter's 243 and She's already proven it on an antelope. My votes to either the Sightron SII or the Bushnell Elite 4200.Can't lose either way.

my .02 is I would get him the Nikon monarch ucc 4x good scope for a great price of $99  I recvomend if you do get a variable no higher than a 7 power max just because I am 30 yrs old and still wind up trying to look at something close with the power maxed out.  only prob with the lower variables is alot of the objectives get smaller
