Well guys i got the new vortex to test drive yesterday, so i will give you my initial thoughts on what ive experienced with it so far and then after i go shoot with it on sat i will add more info to this.
so i opened the box, and right away there was a slight problem the plastic scope covers that have the (yellow lens on one end and the clear lens on the other) the clear lens was cracked all the way across, not a big deal didnt cause any function issues. i looked through the scope unmounted and it looked pretty clear to be honest i was surprised. i next decided to mount it to my 788 22-250 and i checked it out after mounting and it seems to me that the scope has a shorter eye relief than i like, but i may have mounted the scope to far forward too, but there really wasnt a lot of room to play with so i left it be,the scope its self is a little shorter than most of my scopes. i will say that the eye relief seemed pretty constant through the power range. the jump from 3x to 9x is very smooth and doesnt require as much turn to get there as my new style buckmaster does, it turns about like my monarch ucc. the windage and elevation caps are aluminum which is nice the clicks when you adjust them is audiable and i could also feel them with my fingers as i turned them. this scope is probably on par with my buckmaster maybe a hair better its not better than my monarch ucc or my 4200 elite though, but for its cost its actually a nice scope. the warranty is like swifts if i read the manual correctly, i assume it is since there isnt a registration card to fill out and send in. i did some side by side comparisons a bit ago with my other scopes and this one at dusk and its actually not bad at "last light" i would say its a bit better than my buckmaster, but not as good as the ucc or 4200, but once again they arent in the same price range. just for 2nd and 3rd opinions i let my brother in law and my father in law look through it today, it was an overcast dreary day and so there wasnt any sun shining through so they checked it out and the first thing both of them said was wow this scope it clear, my bro in law said it was way better than his nikon pro staff, my father in law thought it was better than his redfields and simmons by far so he too was impressed. im going to take it shooting sat, rain or shine wind or not we will see how it works, even with the warranty expressed the way it is the only question i really want answered about this scope is its durability. let me know if you have any questions about the scope and i will try to either do something to get what you want to know or tell you if i have already done it.

Pyro, search the threads, I posted a write-up on these scopes about 2 weeks ago. The write-up has a lot of good things to say, but also complains about short eye relief.
The scope seems to track well and hold its POI.

im just testing it out for a week or two but i figured i would give my initial thoughts on it and add to it later. i would also like to add that for $180 this scope is well worth it to me, i'd say its very comparable to the ffII.

well i took the scope to the range this morning and played with it for a while, i got up early and got the scope on paper the first shot with my 22-250 and after 5 shots she was zeroed at 100yds, the scope worked great, did a box test that worked pretty well, as well as i could have performed any way so it was good there, the one problem i noticed and it was obvious, but this scope mirages a fair amount and that was at 8:30 this morning and it was only 40 something degrees at that time, it got worse as it got later i quit shooting at 10:45 and by then it was almost a chore to look down range and focus in on my black dot inside the target spot once again the eye relief i thought was a little short, eventhough they show 3-3.5 inches on swfa's web page, i'm glad i put it on my 22-250, it may have been a rodeo on my .280 or my .264win mag. with the miraging i was witnessing at the same time through my nikon buckmaster and also my 4200 elite i wasnt having any issues with the miraging with those two scopes. all in all i think for $180 this is a good scope, im not going to say its junk cause its not. it has some weaknesses but for the price i still think its a nice scope, i would be intrested to step up to a viper and try it out, i hear there bino's are excellent, so i will say give these new scopes a try they arent half bad.

Thanks for the fine review, Hunter.
It's always good to see positive feed back on scopes in the lower price range. |
