Hi folks
Thought I'd ask u "Sniperguys" some questions I haven't been able to get answered in Norway. I currently own a Meopta Meostar R1 3-12x56 Illuminated scope. This is a good scope when price/quality is judged. I hunt mainly during daytime, but i also hunt geese and deer at dusk and dawn, therefore i need a scope that has some quality when it comes to light transmission. The meopta is GOOD at low light, but i don't like the reticle enlarging and the lack of target knobs... My main needs in a new scope are: - 30mm tube - illuminated reticle - NOT enlarging reticle (constant size) - Target knobs The Nikon Monarch X 2.5-10x44 illuminated seems to fit my description, its also a good price! 1000$. The problem is that no shop in Norway have this scope, so I'm ordering from the US. All the reviews I've read never mention the low light capabilities of the scope. Because i can't check the scope before buying, there are some questions I need answered. 1. Is the optical quality as good as my meopta or my Zeiss conquest 4.5-14x50? if not, much worse?? 2. Compared to leupold mark 4, low light hunting?? 3. The illuminated reticle; is the lowest light setting low enough to avoid blinding the vision in low light hunting? 4. Are there any other alternatives for me in this pricerange?? Hope you guys take the time to answer these questions, as I'm in need of help from people actually having seen the scope. Have a happy eastern |

Welcome to The OT!
Scroll through the review section.
I think theres 3 reviews from different people on the Nikon Tactical's.
Not sure if the low light info you seek is in there though.

Thanks for the welcome :)
As this is a "daytime tactical scope" no reviews i've seen mention the dusk/dawn qualities of the scope. But, having had a number of scopes earlier (mostly german), it seems good optics also means good light transmission, which again means good in low light. As for the optics, i guess Nikon is good enough compared to its rivals in the 1000$ range? |

I'd say the Nikon X would be a little behind the Euros optically, but worth the 1K with it's other features, in my opinion.

Behind the european scopes is no surprise. Not to offend u americans, but the european scopes are often superior in the optics (Zeiss, swaro and more), but they are pricier too. For 1000$ i cant get any euro scope in Norway. Scopes with these functions costs at least 2000-2500$ here.
But compared to american scopes, like mark 4 and conquest, the Nikon X isn't bad?? |

Consider me offended. Just kiddin, I totally agree that Euro glass blows away the so called American glass (which isn't even American). While I have several Meopta optics myself and think they are top notch in my opinion and very comparable to other top notch Euro brands I personally have no experience with Nikon other than their cheeper stuff. Have you looked at IOR? Can you get those over yonder? I have a few IOR optics and think they are the best thing going. |

hmmmm, IOR could perhaps be an alternative....., hmmmmmmm
IOR have a 2.3-10x42 that doesnt look so bad..... BUT, is the reticle on these IOR scopes magnifying or is it constant?? |

You can get it either way. SFP would be fixed, where FFP would change with the powers. Also IOR uses the same glass as Meopta and Zeiss and probably other Euro companies as well. Its all Schott Glasswerk.

I recently sold a MonarchX 4x16 50mm w/mil dot reticle. Optically it was good to great but I would not call it the "brightest" scope for dawn & dusk hunting. This is NOT to say that it isn't bright, just that I can't consider it among the best scopes for shooting at those hours. I also used to own a Zeiss Conquest 6.5x20 50mm and, out of the two scopes, the Conquest (to MY EYES) is the "brighter" of the two.
I also have experience with two different IOR models (both 6x24 50mm scopes, one in 30mm & the other in 35mm) and they (in my experience) were NOT brighter than the Conquest but did resolve better. The MonarchX (at least my particular model) is not in the same league optically with either of the IOR models I used to own.
Hope this helps. Best of luck to you.
