Buying a new scope and hunt mostly in Mich. would like to know what
scope would be a good choice. I would like something like a 3-9x? I am
using a savage 30-06 bolt action . what would you spend your $400 on?

Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 or for a bit less Bushnell 2.5-10x40 or 50.All these will be within your budget & are outstanding buys for the price.Personally I like the Zeiss.

4200 6-24x40mm is a good scope but taylored for varmit shooting and not northern midwest Whitetail hunting. I would stick with your instinct to get a 3-9x.
Besides being over-powered for the application, the 4200 6-24x40mm is almost 17" long and weighs 20oz. You almost need a tape measure to appreciate how long a 17" scope is.

I'm with Cory on this one. WAY to much power and bulk for a a 30/06. Stick with the mid-range power scopes mentioned.

i guess, flip a coin, either way you will love your choice, but i think i would have to go with the elite, for the rainguard coatings, and i think the elite might be jsut a hair brighter...not to start a controversy with ranburr.

Cory, I will find you and when I doI see how it is, you and Roy are ganging up on me. I guess I will just have to return that Conquest that I got you for Christmas!
ranburr
P.S. I am thinking about getting a 4200 Elite with Rainguard and the Firefly reticle just so that I can tell Roy that I have both and the Conquest is better! |

These guys are hitting it on the head with their choices. Go with
a Conquest, Burris or the 4200 in 2.5-10x40. I have one on (4200
in 2.5-10x40) my Model 70 .30/06 Winchester and it's a perfect
match!

NO,NO,NO..........get a 8-32x50 bsa on a colt sauer 22-250 african safari grade.
***Warning*** That was just a joke,
Seriously, though, I think 3-9 X 40 Conquest is perfect for .30-06 as long as all your shots are gonna be less than 500yds. Which, with that round they most certainly will be. If u wanna spend more look at the VM/V series. I have one a 2.5-10X50 and i LOVE it.

I have a Sightron S2 3-9x42 and it's a top notch scope. I haven't had a chance to try out the S1 Sightrons.

I would buy the Nikon Monarch 3.5 x 10 x 50. That is in fact what I did. It is mounted on a Remington 700 BDL in the .280 caliber. The large bell lets in enough light that you would swear it was 30 minutes later in the morning. They have superior optics and you will never be sorry for spending another few bucks. Try and find a buddy who repairs guns and see if he can give you his disconted price on parts, etc. You will be around $375 with the discount.
