I was rigging my youngest's  ( he's 10 ) first deer rifle last night . I found him a Winchester Compact model 70  in 7mm/08, and topped it off with a 4200 Elite 3x9x40. My local gunsmith brought the trigger pull down to crisp 3.5 lb.s, installed a Limbsaver, and glass bedded the action. Then I began to wonder back in my mind to my first deer rifle . It was a used Winchester 94 that had the side mounted optics. I believe the first scope I ever tried to see a deer through was a spanking new Bushnell Sportview 3x9x32. I thought it was the "bomb" , despite being essentially useless at dawn and dusk.  It  shot fair to middlin', back when everybody we hunted with basically used 30-30's or semi auto Remingtons out in the woods of  Western MD , and optically whatever was on sale at Kmart.
Now-a-days first time rifle owners have it exponentially better than those of us starting out in the good ole days ( for me - 1978).
What did you all start out with?  Dad's old 94, 700 bolt, Savage 110 ,or  Marlin 336 or.........

Cheers

Win. Model 70 in 30-06 with a Weaver 4x Wideview.  It kicked like a mule and I finally traded it for a Savage 99 in 22 HiPower to add to my Dad's collection.  I bought the Win brand new in 1978/1979.
take em!

First deer rifle I purchased was a Ruger 44 auto carbine and I topped it off with a Redfield Widefield variable, in 1.5-5 or something like that. Man I thought that rig was the sh*tt. The only thing I got with that was a hangover. Couldn't get that to shoot more than 10 rds without a jam.

Funny- When I heard the news about Winchester's supposed demise a couple years back, I had to find another Win 94. I picked up a nice one about 18 months ago and this one shoots a bit better than my first ,and is topped with a Pentax Whitetails Unlimited 2x5. I'll keep this one forever.

Dad bought me my first deer gun. Mauser 98 270 Win with a Tasco Worldclass 3-9 in 1993.  First rifle I bought myself for hunting was a Ruger M77 300 Win Mag.

The ugly dogleg bolt handle, plastic trigger guard Remington M600 Mohawk in .222 topped with a Weaver K4.  Not a very good deer cartridge, but I was 7 years old, and with a short range shot in the vitals, it worked.  My dad cut off the buttstock to fit my LOP.

First gun I ever hunted deer with-Winchester 37A 12 guage single shot, 1983. Currently I am putting together a "semi-custom" M77, .350 Rem. mag.  Quite a few model 700's inbetween!

Santa Claus brought me my first deer rifle when I was 11.  About 1968.  A Remington model 742 BDL Deluxe that I mounted some model of Bushnell scope on it.  I still have it today and it is in pristine condition.  Not the most accurate shooter, but good enough for hunting deer.  By the way, it was a 30-06.

My first deer rifle was a shotgun, Remington 870, 12ga, 30" full choke, with 00 buckshot.  I got for Christmas in 1961 when I was 12.  Nobody hunted with a rifle in East Texas in those days.  When I was 18 I bought myself a Marlin 336 in 30-30 (the good old days).  No scope until a couple of years later when I got a used Redfield 2 3/4X.  I still have all the above.

A semi-sporterized 303 Enfield that I bought for $25 at 17 - took my first 3 deer with it.   Did a lot of shooting with that rifle using surplus full jacket military ammo.  Was a bitch cleaning out the cordite with hot water.   In '71 I bought a Ruger  44 carbine that I still use today.  Unlike Roy have been lucky and no jamming.  Have had many others along the way but just love the little Ruger carbine.

Sure wish the prices were like they were back then.

Grew up in SE Iowa, (no Iowa jokes please) so we couldn't hunt deer with rifles.
But when I was about 10, Dad picked up a sporterized Springfield Armory 1903 in 30-06 for "us" to fool with. Sharp%20Shooter
The story that went with the rifle was that the previous owner whacked a pronghorn "out west" with it.....Yep,%20Thought%20So
I was HOOKED!!

No scope EVER!!! She had peep sights only. Seems like a million years ago.

Dad might have shot 10 rounds through that thing the entire time he owned it, but I shot it every chance I got. Boy, wish I had that rifle now.
