An article with this title is in the new "Shooting Times". It's interesting and offers some reasonable advice, the best of which may be "don't believe what the guy behind the counter at the gun shop says, and believe even less what you read on internet forums". |

Did you notice all the Leupold's in the article! They used a Swaro only because the Leuppy wouldn't fit. Give me a break........ they didn't mention the fact that the Swaro glass is nite and day better. |

You know I am a Leupold fan, but it's pretty obvious who's spending the advertising money. They did mention, or at least include in the pics, most of the "biggies".

There is no perfect scope. 1.There is no scope that will fit all needs. 2. There has never been a scope that is optically perfect. 3. Every shooting discipline has its own specific requirements no one scope is that variable. etc. etc. Proof the article is invalid from the title. every thing else is just ...... something to fill pages and sell a product. A man must know his limitations. CE as DH

I think it's a wise policy to view any opinion, regardless of source, with suspicion unless you trust the opinion giver implicitly or until you have a chance to confirm with your own eyes and your own experiences. There is no substitute for first hand experience under the exact same conditions you intend to use a product.
Magazines are neither right nor wrong; they are just entertainment and another source of information. As long as a magazine depends on product ads as its main source of revenue, favorable product reviews (which describes almost all of them) should be taken with a healthy dose of skepticism. It's not that the magazine writer is being dishonest, because almost all products from reputable brand name companies have their good qualities. But, it's somewhat a conflict of interest for a magazine to critically review products from companies who place ads in their magazine.
As for internet forums, anybody can get on the internet and say anything they want and there's no standard bearer for ensuring the truth. We learn to trust those whose statements coincide with our own personal experiences or those who have a proven track record of demonstrating objectivity. But in the final analysis, much of what is said is based on opinion, and opinion is based on personal preference, which is also neither right nor wrong. Again, there is no substitute for first hand experience.

NO NEVER ever trust the opines given in a forum where the opinionated are not being reimbursed by a company. SURELY those poinions are extremely biased. LMAO I'm going to put my trust in folks like Koshkin, RifleDude, Cheaptrick, and Pyro. I know these folks to be honest and objective. NOT SOME PAID HACK WRITING AN ARTICLE.

+1 On what Cybrog and RifleDude said. If you jump around to some of the other forums, you can see some very very biased opinions. This forum has many intelligent individuals in which I trust their judgment. If your brain and mindset get skewed by other forums, just come back to the OT and read for a while do searches and you will come back to reality.
Again to second what RifleDude mentioned in his post, you need to put you hands on product to see what works the best for you. Again thanks all, Rob |

I actually agreed with most of the article. Things like don't put a S&B 4-16X50 on a Model 7; it looks silly. Most people that buy fancy reticles never learn to use them, and would be better off with a duplex. He also says 56mm objectives and illuminated reticles are fine if you're in the north country (as in Northern Europe where it's legal) where twilight lasts for hours, but they are unnecessary anywhere here in the USA, unless you plan on illegal shooting. I have never hunted north of Colorado or south of the Rio Grande, but I've found this to be true.
As far as forums go, anybody that's been here a while knows who speaks from experience.

Sorry R.C. I wasn't implying anything there brother........ Yeah, you are fairly objective as well. There are a few that I didn't mention, I just wanted to point out that, I'm going to trust this forum for dependable and accurate info, long before I trust a write up about such things in some rag.

Overall, I thought the article was pretty good too. Before I joined this forum, I would have thought nothing about all the Leupy's pictured, except that it added to my believe that Leupy's were hands down the best........ Now I know better!
