Apparently a person can follow two routes to get brass for 6mmAI.

One is to use 6mmRem brass and fireform them.

The other is to use 7mm08 7x57brass and then to neck them down before fire forming.

What are the pros and cons of each method?

I don't believe that you can make a 6mm Ackley Improved case from a 7mm 08. I think that you meant a 7 x 57 mauser. If only Lapua would produce .244 Rem brass. Many mid-long range target shooters like myself would be chambering 6mm AI's to push the 105-115 gr pills.

The 7-08 and the 243 share the same brass, not the 6mm Rem. That being said, a buddy has a 6mm Rem that chambers and fires 243 Win ammo just as well as it does 6mm Rem...

The .243 Win was the first factory produced cartridge based off of the .308 Win. case.
Then the 7mm-08 was the next factory produced round.
And finaly the .260 Rem was the last factory produced cartridge from the .308 Win case.

I'm sorry, but I don't think that what your friend is doing (putting a loaded .243 Win cartridge in a .244 Rem/6mm Rem chambered rifle) is safe. Yes, they are both 6mm caliber rifles, but the chambers aren't even close to being the same.

The 6mm Remington is based off the 257 Roberts case.

Yes , quite correct Blackbird. It should be 7x57 Mauser.

What I have gleaned is that Norma makes decent 7X57 brass.

The advantage of going the 7X57 route is that thicker case necks are achieved as apposed to fire forming 6mmRem to AI.

The brass must be full sized to 6mm, then the necks trimmed and then fireformed.

Thick case necks are an advantage ? You might want to check with the guy who reamed that chamber for the Ackley round.

Roy,
The case necks must be turned to 3 thou smaller then the chamber size. I am told that a 6mm Rem fireformed may have a thinner neck then a 7x57, which has been resized to 6mm and then turned to be 3thou smaller then the chamber size.
That is for a standard 6mm chamber, nothing funny on the smith's side.

So that was the start of this thread:
What are the advantages or disadvantages?

The advantage of a thick neck is longer case life.

So far I have picked up the following:

7mm necked down:
Advantage: thicker case neck with longer case life.
Disadvantage: two extra  proses....full resize, then neck turn, then fireform.

Well if you want a tight necked (hard to chamber) then, the 7x57 is your huckleberry. You may need to ream the insides of those necks to..ie bullet tension.
