I am planning to build a heads up display for my car. I have read few posts but those didn't help me. The main challenge for me is to focus the image to infinity, so that the display appears ahead of the windshield and not on the windshield.

The things that are required are a display (source), fresnel lens, mirror (optional) and combiner (teleprompter glass).

Now I dont know how and where to place these things so that I get an image ahead of windshield. I think its easier to project it on the windshield but I want it to project it ahead of it.

Please explain it with a diagram. And let me know I require more items. I dont have much knowledge in optics.

What data are you wanting to display? I have a free app called Digi HUD on my phone. It has a direct or reverse display feature. In reverse display, you lay the phone on the dash to provide Heads Up Display of GPS data on the windshield. It shows speed, Avg speed, distance, time, and direction. Plus some more features that I rarely use. You can display in several colors to suit the conditions. It has proven to be a handy app.

I want to display anything that shows up on my iphone. I tried placing my phone on the dash. I was not really happy with the result. There is a ghost image which I think that can be rectified by photoprompter glass or film. But the main issue is, it is inverted and the image forms near to the windshield. I want to project it till road. Will placing a convex lens invert the image? Can it be used to project it till the road?

Please help. I have no knowledge about optics.

That sounds like a lot of junk obscuring the windshield. A crash waiting to happen me thinks. Contact a teleprompter company. Maybe they can help you.

You need projection optics.
Your best bet is to buy a car that already has the HUD feature.

@3_tens: I would try my best not to obstruct my view by placing stuff on dashboard.
@Koshkin: Good one. :) I recently bought a bimmer and trading it for HUD feature will cost me a fortune. :)
