Checking aboard. USN, 68-75, 3 tours in Nam, designated marksman (we didn't use the term sniper) and I shot a Winchester 70 in 270 caliber with both Unertyl and Redfield scopes. Loaded my own rounds even then. After I got out I deer hunted and went to Montana (love that place) elk hunting several times. Bagged a big bull at a little over 700 yards with my Ruger #1 in 270. I am now retired but have been pretty incapatated due to 2 liver transplants in 2007. But I still shoot a little but not near as much as I would like. My main battery now is an M1a which Hook Boutin helped me build and a Windham Weaponry 308 which is the most accurate gas gun I ever shot. I use Leupold optics on all my rifles but am looking at the SWFA SS line. My question is this: does the new line still have the ability to only illuminate the center dot? On the web page it shows the entire reticle lit up. I am pretty anal about my gear. I only use FFP, mil dot scopes with 50+ objective lens.

Sorry for the rambling, but technology has left me in the dirt.

Welcome to Optics Talk. There's a few other Navy vets here as well.

The illuminated 5-20x50 has a single dot illumination.

Other illuminated SS scopes, illuminate the whole central portion of the pattern.

Which one were you looking at?

The 5-20 would be good, but I was looking at the 3-15. I have shot 1000 yds with a 14x for so long a 20x might just put me over the top. Having a scope that allows you to shoot beyond your bullet just blows my mind. I mostly just do the long shots to show the young fellers it can be done. And to win enough money for a burger.

The 3-15 is not illuminated. So the 5-20x is your only choice.

So navy DM's back in the Nam usedmodel 70's? In .270? With Unertle and Redfield scopes? And they allowed you to reload your own .270 ammo no less?

Yes. We were not tied down like conventional forces. One guy carried a Winchester 94. 357 and 44 mag sidearms. One guy had a cut down 12 ga double barrel shotgun for his sidearm. We could use anything we desired. If it wasn't on the FSN list we had to buy it ourself. I used a Stoner 63, M14 (my favorite), a 44 Automag, 1911's, Ithaca 37 and 3 knives. My loadout depended on the mission. But at that time, we didn't exist.

Quite an odd aray of weapons chosen by trained professionals to run heads up against a modern assult rifle like the AK47. Makes sence to me not.
