Need a rangefinder. Might go for the Leica 1600, just not sure I need that much. I don't shoot at big game farther than 500 and mostly I will be using for squirrel shooting, often times in relatively flat fields and rarely past 400 yards. So, do I need something like the Leica 1600 to get flat field readings out to 400 or 450 without having a big mound or object to bounce off? Maybe the 1200, or one of the cheaper "1000" models from other companies would suffice for this?

Thanks!

The Leica 1200 would be fine. Another to consider is the Zeiss PRF. It's 8X so a bit more useful magnification, although that also means the exit pupil is smaller...although both are small enough to really only be of use in decent light. Even my Swaro 8x30 had its limitations. I switched to the Zeiss because it was much lighter and acquires readings faster.

As for flat fields, as long as you have something vertical high enough not to be confused with vegetation or other obstructions you'll be fine with most any decent rangefinder. The worst terrain is gently rolling. It's really hard then to know whether you're hitting a slight rise in between or the target object. If I can, I look for anything I can rest the RF on, like a fence post.

Thanks. And I suppose I often have a squirrel mount or something to bounce off.
