I have an old Weaver J4 (circa 1949) mounted on my much-loved old Winchester 63 (same age). The J4 was never a 'great' scope, and Win63 purists will gasp in horror at the travesty of having a scope on one, but in fact lots of kids like me back in the 1950s shot exactly this setup, so the J4 is historically correct sitting on top of Winnie.

Anyway, the J4 has gone cloudy. When I unscrew the objective and ocular and examine them under oblique light, I see multicolored blotches between the lens elements...looks like the optical cement used to glue the elements together is probably starting to delaminate.

I would like to give this old scope a new lease on life. I'm reasonably familiar with optics, being an experienced microscopist. My (tentative) plan is to measure the focal lengths of the objective and ocular, then go searching through the Newport catalog for some coated compound lenses that match the old diameters and FL's. Unglue the old lenses from their blued rings, glue in the new ones, and hey presto.

My question I crazy, or what? I may be a microscopist, but a rifle scope ain't a microscope, so when push comes to shove I really don't know what I'm gettin into here. Anyone out there have similar experience who can either cheer me on or talk me down off the ledge before it's too late?
