This is somewhat in the riflescope forum but more aimed at tactical shooters. I am upgrading the Sightron SI 3-9x40 scope on my Weatherby Vanguard 300 Roy. It has served fine but its time for something better with more eye relief....After lots of research and reading and tweaks to the budget, I may have the opportunity to get a SS10x42. This is my primary long range hunting rifle for shots out to 400 yards for western big game here in Idaho. We hunt in Canyon Country so the closest shots I encounter are at least 75 yards or so. Plus It should stand up to the recoil, provide good eye relief and help me learn mil dot shooting and ranging and hopefully allow me to extend my shooting range considering I am shooting a 168 Barnes TTSX AT 3380 fps....Am I going the right direction with a fixed 10X ss????

for a hunting gun I'd go with the 6X personally more than capable of taking shots on game at 400yds but gives you better use at closer yardage

The standard SS line would perform admirably for your application.
Dependable, Rugged, lasting, glass is good enough for 400 no problem.

Ask yourself this question as far as magnification. When you hunt now with the 3 by 9 do you dial the power down for short Range then dial it up for long rang. If you do not feel comfortable with it at 9 power for your 75 yard game then I would go with the 6 x. Not as good for practice (target shooting) at 400 yds on paper but plenty of power for med to large game. I would personally go with the 6x for hunting and I think you will find it is not lacking for shooting game out to 400. That is the same as open sights at 66 yards.

Field of view at 100 yds
10x only gives 13 ft
6 x gives  20 ft

at 75 yards that would be
10x gives 9.75 ft
6 x gives 15 ft

a little over 1/3 more field of view.

I'm a beginner but I just purchased a Savage 10FCP HS .308 with TPS base and rings with the SWFA Super Sniper 10X42 HD and I just love it. I'm hiotting sh*t that at 300yds loke as if it was 75yds away and everything is as clear as day. There's a guy on here that goes by Koshkin you should ask him any scope questions he was the one that put me in my set up and man let me tell you it was worth every penny. I don't know much but the SS 10X42HD works like a charm I wouldn't trade it over a Swarovski or any other high dollar scope.

10x is a lot for hunting.  I would hate to be limited to 10x all the time.

I agree, 10X only is limiting, and for long shots I like higher magnification, especially if you have time to get set up well.

I don't know the SS line, but do they do a good variable?

I would suggest the 6x over the 10x for a hunting scope it will be brighter in low light and easier to shoot without a rest.  If you can afford to go to the 3-9 it is worth the difference but I would wait for the new reticle as they just announced it today.
