thanks for the warm welcome folks. To be honest i just love shooting in general. One of my favs to shoot is my days 30 30 lever action. Im a huuge lever action fan.  Im thinking of getting a browning 30 06 as my first. Little unsure about what a good combo is for turkey/fowl etc

Nothing wrong with old school, I think many of us here have and use lever actions, seems like a perfect place to start.  Browning BLR in 30-06 would make a great gun!

I've been wanting a lever action Marlin stainless 45-70 for some time now they have some really cool models now.  The 30-06 would be a good one to start with.

Welcome back, and thanks for your service!

The Browning BLR should fill both your wishes...A lever action rifle in .30-06!  A much more versatile rifle than the .30-30.  Better yet, you can get it a take-down model which is easy to travel with.

We've owned several BLRs in .308, and they shot just fine.  If you want more power, Browning also makes this rifle in a .300 WSM.

As for turkey/fowl etc. and shotgunning of almost any kind, you can't beat a 12 gauge Remington 870.  I use their top-of the-line Wingmaster with a 26" light barrel and screw-in chokes.

For ducks and geese,  you have to use steel or other approved non-lead shot.  (A three-inch chamber will let you use any reasonable load ...and some unreasonable ones!)

As for regular game birds (i.e., dove, quail, pheasant, partridge) anything that needs doing can be done with the proper choke and a one-ounce load.  Don't fall for the beat-yourself-to-death loads.

Have fun!

haha thanks for all the help guys. Had a rough day trying to buy my gun today, didnt realize that my address on my drivers license was out dated. And since its an instate license, i cant use my military ID and orders to negate that. Sooo i had to go get a new license at the DMV. Anywho, i did pick up a browning 30 06 X bolt. Im not going to throw a scope on it till next year when i go out west, so does anyone have a recommendation on some good rifle sights to throw on it?

My favorite gun is a Marlin lever gun in .357 mag.  I have a 1.25-5x scope on it and it is a blast to shoot.  It holds 10 rounds with the one in the tube. It is super light weight, but packs a pretty good punch.

Lever guns are a lot of fun IMO.
