I didn't see a thread for newbies to check in so I'll say hello here. Looks like lots of good info.

My question is about the power selector ring on a new Leupold VX-1 scope I had mounted on a Mini-14 (I didn't do it myself). The ring is so tight I can barely turn it. I have to work at it, and it's difficult if not impossible to change the power setting while sighting through the scope.

My aft ring is a good 1.5" from the psr so I didn't think that was the problem, but I'm sure I could be wrong. Is there a proper procedure/sequence for loosening/retightening the rear ring to check it?

Thanks for any help you all can provide. I'm looking forward to the day I might be able to help with answers instead of just ask questions.

It should be snug and not turn freely but if it's real hard I would send it back for repair or replacement whatever they see fit. Some times just working them a bit back and forth eases them up? Welcome to the Optics Talk.........

If your power ring is tight due to your rear scope ring being too tight, don't continue turning the power ring, as you can cause damage to your zoom tube.  If you loosen the rear ring cap, does your power ring then turn easily?  If so, you have either overtightened the screws on your rear ring, the rings are out of alignment front to back, or both.  If your rings are misaligned front to back, you could be bending the tube enough to put the scope's innards into a bind.  I would check alignment with a scope ring alignment tool and lap the rings.  You don't need to tighten the ring screws super tight; 15 - 20 inch pounds is plenty of torque.

First, though, what kind of rings are you using?

I am using the Ruger rings that came with the Mini-14. I dod not install the scope myself. It was done by the store where I bought it when I bought it so I never had a chance to operate the power selector ring right out of the box and don't know if it's been tight from the beginning or if it's mounted incorrectly.

Thanks for the replies. I'll get busy and report back.
